The 2019 college football season ended with purple and gold confetti raining down on the field at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
The confetti was used to celebrate LSU's College Football Playoff National Championship win over Clemson. In its first appearance in the national title game since 2011, LSU stopped Clemson's bid for back-to-back titles with a 42-25 victory. LSU's victory was seen by the largest audience in any game that was played during the 2019 season, according to Sports Media Watch.
There was a lot of interest in a game that pitted two 14-0 teams against each other. Clemson had not lost in 29 consecutive games entering the playoff final. It is possible that the matchup also featured the next two No. 1 overall NFL draft picks in LSU Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
"Now I think that this team is going to be mentioned as one of the greatest teams in college football history, 15-0, one of the greatest teams in LSU history, led by some of the greatest players; give them all the credit," LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said after the game. "But you know, that's for you guys to decide. We're national champs. We're 15-0. Whether we're mentioned as one of the greatest teams or not, that doesn't matter to me. I think we're going to get to work, we'll go to class on Wednesday and we'll start working on next year."
