Penn State football fans have been eyeing the 2020 football season for quite some time.
They knew this would be their most complete collection of talent and depth since head coach James Franklin arrived in 2014.
A successful quarterback will return. The running back and tight end rooms will be loaded. The offensive line should be its strongest in years. And while the defense loses valuable experience, it does return All-America linebacker Micah Parsons and plenty of elite, young promise.
They are a popular Top 10 preseason pick.
Then again, does their schedule appear to favor a run into the College Football Playoff picture?
The Lions must prove their worth and hype early with road trips to Virginia Tech and Michigan in the first five weeks.
The middle of the schedule will determine whether they will earn Franklin's first 11-win regular season — and possibly his first playoff bid.

Interestingly enough, the Lions have never played Virginia Tech, just a six-hour drive down Interstate 81.
Penn State's 2020 football schedule
(Start times and TV assignments have not yet been announced)
Sept. 5: KENT STATE ... Golden Flashes are coming off their first bowl game victory in program history.
Sept. 12: at Virginia Tech ... The ACC Coastal Division favorite returns a lot. A prime time kickoff in Blacksburg?
Sept. 19: SAN JOSE STATE ... An ominous cross-country road trip for the Spartans means one of the only true breathe-easy games.
Sept. 26: NORTHWESTERN ... Pat Fitzgerald's team is in line for a serious upgrade after last year's 3-9 disaster.
Oct. 3: at Michigan ... The last two trips to the Big House have been brutal. Everything expects to hinge on whoever the new QB will be.
Oct. 10: Bye Week.
Oct. 17: IOWA ... Hawkeyes might as well be in the Big Ten East. Fifth straight meeting with the Lions.
Oct. 24: OHIO STATE ... Justin Fields throwing to Julian Fleming in Beaver Stadium? That hurts. But the Lions could/should be favored in their make-or-break game.
Oct. 31: at Indiana ... Hoosiers, coming off their best season in forever, get the Lions at an opportune time at home.
Nov. 7: at Nebraska ... Arguably, the biggest question mark in the league. A lot riding on coach Scott Frost by this point in the season.
Nov. 14: MICHIGAN STATE ... The most disappointing offense in the league must make major strides ... or major change is coming.
Nov. 21: MARYLAND ... How much will the Lions truly be playing for at this point? That will color everything about Senior Day.
Nov. 28: at Rutgers ... The Knights never gave up despite another landslide of losses. Now, they are primed for a good-vibes jolt under new/old coach Greg Schiano.
Postseason highlights:
Dec. 5: Big Ten Championship ... The winners of the Big Ten East and West divisions will play for the title in Indianapolis.
Dec. 30: Cotton Bowl
Jan. 1, 2021: Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl CFP semifinal, Sugar Bowl CFP semifinal
Jan. 2, 2021: Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl
Jan. 11, 2021: CFP National Championship (Miami Gardens, Florida)
