Quarterbacks are generally viewed as one of the foundations of a recruiting class, and West Virginia has gotten a commitment from one of the top players at that position in the country.

Nicco Marchiol, an outstanding passer with excellent pocket mobility, made the Mountaineer program his choice over two other finalists – Arizona State and Michigan State on his birthday, June 21 – just one day after the celebration of the State of West Virginia’s creation. That synchronicity set off a swell of celebration in the WVU fanbase, given his credentials and the number of schools which were recruiting him.
Playing for Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix), Marchiol had offers from top schools across the nation, including Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Colorado State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Michigan, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, TCU, USC, USF, Utah and Washington State, in addition to his finalists. He also had offers from several Group of Five programs.
Marchiol shows strong fundamentals in all areas of quarterback play. He has a solid arm and produces good velocity on his throws, and scans the field well in moving through his progressions. The lefthander also avoids pressure well, but doesn’t get caught up in staring at rushers. He keeps his eyes downfield after picking an escape route or rollout point, and throws with accuracy whether on the run or stationary in the pocket.

That last is extremely important, especially in today’s game where throwing receivers open or hitting them in stride to maximize yardage after the catch is vital. His film shows all types of throws, from those in the middle of the field, deep and to the sideline, and he has the ability to place his passes over and between defenders to find his receivers on the run.
Marchiol is also an effective runner when he decides to pull the ball down and attack the field with his legs. That, combined with his ability to throw on the run, makes him tough to defend, as he has to be accounted for in both the run and the pass game.
His commitment to West Virginia is actually his second in his recruiting process. He committed to Florida State on the last day of January, but after the Seminoles took a commitment from another quarterback in April, Marchiol began reconsidering his future, and around June 1 decided to take additional visits. His trip to West Virginia was marked by a number of extremely positive reviews, including this one with WVU president E. Gordon Gee.
Speechless after having the privilege to listen to Dr. Gee speak this morning. A true football fan, and more importantly a man dedicated to developing young men. pic.twitter.com/995GHQ9og4

Marchiol is the eighth known commitment in West Virginia’s Class of 2022. The Mountaineers are believed to have at least three additional commitments who have not yet announced their choices publicly.
