Three-star athlete Perry Fisher commits to Maryland football - Testudo Times

Maryland football picked up a commitment Saturday with three-star athlete Perry Fisher announcing his pledge.

Fisher selected the Terps over offers from Akron, Florida A&M and Mercer, with additional interest from Florida State, Purdue and Tulane. Maryland being willing to take a shot and offer Fisher was instrumental in his decision.

“[Me] and the coaching staff have been close since day one,” Fisher told Testudo Times. “Some [schools] just don’t recruit that well... they’ll offer [an athlete] and then just forget about it.”

“But with Maryland, they took their time, they reached out to me every week to check on me, my family and how school is going and stuff like that. They actually really seemed like they care about what I have going on, so that’s what stood out.”

While visiting campus in June, Fisher and his mother were able to take in the sights of Maryland’s campus as well as the newly-unveiled Jones-Hill House facility. While he said the views were nice, meeting head coach Mike Locksley was a difference maker.

“He seems like a real humble person,” Fisher said. “He was telling us his story and where he came from and his background just really stood out. A lot of people don’t tell you where they came from and what they had to do to get to their position and stuff like that.”

At Lincoln High School, Fisher has played quarterback, where in 2020 he completed 62.3% of his passes for 1,433 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions. He also added 289 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Coaches at Maryland, however, see him fitting in as a receiver at the next level.

“Me being able to see the [wide receivers] and how they play, they get the ball a lot. There’s a lot of good players on that team that are receivers and everybody touches the ball every single game,” Fisher said. “It’s just a lovely place to be, so that’s where I wanted to be.”

Fisher stands at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds and also plays shooting guard/small forward for the basketball team at Lincoln. While at Maryland, Fisher did standard testing for the coaching staff where he ran a 4.5 second 40-yard dash to showcase his ability.

This fall, Fisher said he plans to continue playing quarterback, but will add in wide receiver reps ahead of reaching the next level. Working on his route running and syncing his hips will be key points of emphasis in his transition, he added.

Fisher joins a strong pipeline of talent from the sunshine state to join the Maryland program, with the Terps bringing in six Florida signees in 2021 and having three-star defensive back Lionell Whitaker on board in 2022.

“That’s a real big thing, because I don’t want to be the only Florida guy up there of course,” Fisher said. “But knowing there going to be a lot of Florida guys heading up there and some already being there, it speaks a lot.”

The Terps now have 11 commitments in the Class of 2022, sitting at No. 31 in the nation and No. 8 in the Big Ten. Fisher is one of Maryland’s three committed prospects lacking a 247 Sports composite score, which keeps them from factoring into the team ranking.
