Welcome Home: Football Newcomers Arrive in Ypsilanti - EMU Eagles

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The average lifespan in the United States of America is 27,375 days. While many of us hope to make lasting memories each and every time the sun rises and falls, the fact is, most days fade away. Today, June 21, 2021, is not one of those days, especially if you are part of the Eastern Michigan University football program.

One of the most exciting days of the year for any team, eighth-year Head Coach, Chris Creighton, joined by his staff, their families, and current student-athletes, welcomed 31 new members of the team to their new homes for the first time this morning.

Players and their families entered the main atrium of the Student-Athlete Performance Center to an energized staff, 10-foot balloon display – Eastern Michigan Green and White, of course, and bright sun shining through floor-to-ceiling windows that look over The Factory.

After a complete morning that included moving into residences and other official activities, the team gathered for its first dinner together. Seated in Rynearson Stadium's north end zone, laughs were exchanged following a small-group session in which veteran players taught the school's fight song to the newcomers. Newcomers were even greeted by the live eagle that flies over the stadium during the Star Spangled Banner on gameday.

Following dinner, the team and families were escorted to a contingent to tour busses and escorted to nearby Ford Lake Park. There, the team, again broken up into small groups, took part in a relay race around the park. From two-person canoe races, to wiffle ball tossing, and much more, teams battled for nearly 30 minutes to claim first place.

No night would be complete without dessert, and the team certainly did not go without it. Shaved ice was on the menu as players were able to choose from an assortment of flavors. A sweet ending to a fantastic first day on campus.

From here, the newcomers will get integrated into EMU's workout system and will join their new teammates in preparation for the upcoming fall slate.
