While the class of 2021 has been short on top-tier talent for Auburn football–and that is not to say they haven’t gotten undervalued studs, but have simply lacked many 4-star additions or any 5-star signings–the future looks bright on the Plains.
That’s because the new coaching staff has put the Tigers in the conversation for some of the top players in the country for the next few recruiting cycles.
5-star defensive end Peter Woods, an in-state stud from Alabaster, Alabama, was the most recent high school star to consider Auburn football to be the launching pad to his prospective NFL career in 2023. Woods is the current #2 overall defensive end in the class.
Now, Bryan Harsin, Derek Mason, and Zac Etheridge are talking to the #10 overall recruit in the Class of 2023. 5-star cornerback Tony Mitchell met with the coaching staff and had great things to say about his experience (via 247Sports):
“It was great,” Mitchell told Inside the Auburn Tigers. “It was my first time being at Auburn (with the new staff).
He later revealed why Auburn football could have a slight recruiting edge:
I have got a couple of teammates that go there, Sawyer Pate and Evan McGuire. Sawyer came to our photo shoot so that was good.
Most importantly, there appears to be tangible momentum towards the Tigers landing their man:
“I liked their energy,” Mitchell said. “They were real excited. Everything they have been telling me over the phone seems real. I liked how they were in person. They seemed like great guys. I just want to continue to build that relationship with them.”
“They want to get to know my family and help me succeed as a man in life and obviously on the football field as well. They seem very cool. I just want to continue to build that relationship.”
With Roger McCreary, Smoke Monday, and transfers Donovan Kaufman and Dreshun Miller hopping aboard, Auburn football appears set to remain one of the toughest teams to score through the air on.
That tradition will become even stronger with the addition of Mitchell for Harsin’s third go-round on the Plains in 2023.
