New head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program hit a blip on the road this month that was not expected. Texas figured out on June 22 that it would be losing the former four-star recruit and junior wide receiver Jake Smith to the NCAA Transfer Portal. This news is pretty abrupt and shocking for Texas, but it is something this group will have to recover from fast.
It won’t be all that long before summer workouts conclude for Sark and the Longhorns, and fall camp kicks off. Before that time arrives, the Longhorns will need to have the receiving corps depth chart largely figured out.
Granted, losing Smith is something that presents mixed thoughts for the Longhorns. On one hand, it appears that Texas will still be fine in terms of wide receiver depth heading into next season even with the loss of Smith. And to add to that, Smith was often injured over the course of the past two years.
Texas football and WR Jake Smith parting ways this offseason?
On the other hand, the Longhorns don’t have much proven depth in the receiving corps this year, and Smith was one of their most productive returning wideouts. It hurts to lose returning production that still had a lot of potential left to reach with a player like Smith.
As far as the next steps for Smith are concerned, what could be the move for him after putting his name in the transfer portal this week?
Here’s a look into three notable potential landing spots for Smith out of the portal this offseason.
