Oklahoma football’s biggest recruiting event of the year — the ChampU BBQ — was held over the weekend, and it has already hooked one of the big fish the Sooners were hopeful of reeling in.
Four-star running back Gavin Sawchuk from Littleton, Colorado, on Tuesday officially announced his commitment to play football at Oklahoma. Sawchuck was one of 20 or so official invitees to the two-day recruiting event hosted by Lincoln Riley and his coaches and staff at the OU campus.
Sawchuk chose Oklahoma over three other schools — Ohio State, Notre Dame and USC — he had earlier announced as his finalists. The 5-foot, 11-inch, 185-pound running back is ranked as the No. 2 running back in the 2022 class by 247Sports and No. 3 by Rivals. He had offers from over 20 major programs, including Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska and Stanford.
Oklahoma apparently had made quite an impression on Sawchuk even before the visit this past weekend. Sawchuk’s father, Kevin, told Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports that his son knew from his first visit (back before the pandemic) that OU felt like home.
Not long after his arrival at OU over the weekend, the young recruit looked over at his parents and said, “It still felt like home,” according to Wiltfong.
A little later in the weekend, the younger Sawchuk was in running back’s coach DeMarco Murray’s office and committed on the spot. “We were shocked,” Kevin told Wiltfong.
“The family environment they have here fits what we do,” Kevin said. “We go by some pillars — faith, family, education, football — and that fits our family pillars.
“I feel like Oklahoma is the same way, where some of these other schools it’s all football,” he said.
A three-year varsity starter at Valor Christian High School, Sawchuk has rushed for 3,720 yards and 49 touchdowns and has averaged 9.1 yards per carry. He is considered one of the fastest RB prospects in the country. He posted a time of 10.62 in the 100-meter dash as a sophomore.
Sawchuk is the ninth commitment in Oklahoma’s 2022 class, which also includes five-star wide receiver Luther Burden and four-star running back Raleek Brown.
The Sooners’ 2022 class is currently ranked No, 5 by both 247Sports Composite and Rivals.
