The Texas A&M Football team has been on a roll in the recruiting cycle. Last week, the Aggies picked up a handful of big-name recruits, with the lowest-rated pickup being an underrated linebacker prospect with an impressive offer sheet.
They also picked up the nation’s best long snapper, as Jimbo Fisher continues to flex his recruiting prowess. The hot streak in recruiting extended all the way to the 2023 class, where a 4-star quarterback committed to play in College Station. As of right now, the Aggies can do no wrong.
On Tuesday, many Texas A&M Football fans thought that streak was going to continue with a 5-star player in the 2022 class.
A 5-star 2022 Texas A&M Football LB prospect announced his commitment on Tuesday… or did he
On Monday, news surfaced that Harold Perkins would be moving his commitment date up to the following day, Tuesday the 29th. For a handful of college football teams, this was huge, as Perkins is the best linebacker prospect in his class.
Aggie fans were on commit-watch, as Perkins is looked at as a player who is heavily considering Texas A&M as his destination.
It’s unclear whether or not these guys were in on the joke, but a handful of reliable recruiting analysts announced that Perkins would be committing on Tuesday. One of these analysts was Sam Spiegelman of Rivals in a tweet that seemed completely legitimate.
In every way, this looked like a completely real commitment, which made the eventual truth hard to comprehend for a lot of Aggie fans. On Tuesday, Perkins’ commitment came, though it wasn’t what a lot of fans were expecting.
Here was his commitment.
That’s right, Perkins wasn’t committing to a college football team, he was committing to play in the Polynesian Bowl, a competition between high school players in Hawaii. Not quite as catchy, but definitely one of the more interesting stunts that has been pulled in recent memory.
Though Aggie fans may be slightly disappointed, this will be a great opportunity for Perkins to display his football talent.
We can assume that his original commitment date will stand true. He intends to announce his commitment in the Under Armour All-American game later this year. Right now, Perkins is a favorite to go to Texas A&M but the Aggies are still fighting with in-state rival Texas for the highly-touted prospect.
Let’s hope his next commitment is the real deal.
