For the die-hard Texas A&M Football fans reading this title — don’t worry, I’m not jumping ship. In fact, you’ll find that I feel quite the opposite.
The Texas A&M Football team could have its best season of all time in 2021. Seriously. They return some very important pieces on the defensive side of the ball while maintaining their most exciting talent on the offensive side of the ball in players like Jalen Wydermyer, Ainias Smith, and Isaiah Spiller.
There are very exciting parts of this team from the coaching staff to the players out on the field, nobody will deny that. Nobody will deny the team’s potential, either.
It may, however, be too early to crown the Texas A&M Football team as a top ten squad for the 2021-22 season. Here’s why.
Elevated expectations could be what dooms the Texas A&M Football team in the end
As things stand, the college football world is hyping up a Texas A&M Football team, which has nearly no combined experience between the offensive line and quarterback position. Right now, the Aggies don’t even know who is going to be under center in game one next season.
Yes, Haynes King is exciting but it may be time to pump the brakes. I’m saying this as the very same guy who has constantly compared King to Johnny Manziel.
Not only is King inexperienced, but the second-year quarterback also hasn’t even won the job yet. When he does, he’ll be taking snaps against SEC teams behind the most inexperienced offensive line in the conference. Kenyon Green is the only returning starter, projected to be taken in the first round of next year’s NFL Draft. Even Green will be undergoing a position change, from guard to tackle.
There’s no way around it — offensive line is the most important position in football. The pieces are set up around this O-Line unit, but their performance will make or break Jimbo Fisher’s 2021-22 season.
I do think that this Texas A&M Football team has a limitless ceiling. Almost every position has an above-average proven performer ready to step up, but what have they done to deserve a top ten ranking? It’s hard to call this a blatant error on college football media’s part, but it is most definitely a premature honor.
This offseason, the Aggies are positioned in the top ten of most early college football rankings based on what they did last season with a different offensive line, quarterback, and leading tackler. This team has a lot of work to do and they’ll be spending the entire season proving that they’re worth that top ten ranking.
This squad can make it to the College Football Playoff but right now, they’re far from it.
Hopefully, this works as motivation for an Aggie program that is looking to have a historical season in 2021.
