Site of Two of Cal Poly's Top Division I Football Victories Demolished - Cal Poly - Cal Poly Athletics

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Jack Murphy Stadium (The Murph). Qualcomm Stadium (The Q). SDCCU Stadium.

Call it what you want. It's gone.

The Mission Valley site of two of the most memorable football victories in Cal Poly's Division I history has been torn down to make room for a new Aztec Stadium, now taking shape adjacent to the old facility.

In March, the final phase of the demolition was completed with the last light tower and upper bowel area of the 55-year-old stadium torn to the ground. The original stadium no longer is visible from the Interstate 8 and Interstate 15 freeways.

More than 14 years ago, Kyle Shotwell recorded four sacks, James Noble rushed for 100 yards and Nick Coromelas kicked three field goals, including the game-winning 37-yarder with 1:50 to play, as Cal Poly stunned San Diego State 16-14.

"They hate our guts," Mustang head coach Rich Ellerson said. "They felt embarrassed. They were heartbroken over that. It's a huge win, no question. There was so much on the table, and the fact that it was San Diego State. ... That's all powerful stuff."

Two years later, the Mustangs did it again. Andrew Gardner kicked a 21-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Mustangs to a 29-27 victory over the Aztecs in the 2008 season opener for both teams.

"Cal Poly, based on its beating of San Diego State two years ago and what happened last night, has a better program than the one on Montezuma Mesa. Plain. Simple," wrote a San Diego Union-Tribune columnist.

Kyle Shotwell celebrates Cal Poly's 16-14 win over San Diego State in 2006 after setting school Division I record with four sacks.
In the 2006 game, Cal Poly opened with a 23-yard Coromelas field goal and scored again with 32 seconds left in the first half on a 28-yard pass from Matt Brennan to Ramses Barden, cutting the Aztecs' lead to 14-10.

Coromelas added a 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 14-13.

Senior free safety Kenny Chicoine recovered a San Diego State fumble at the Aztec 23-yard line with 3:02 remaining and Brennan ran three times for three yards to set up the game-winning field goal by Coromelas.

San Diego State moved the ball 50 yards in eight plays to the Cal Poly 30-yard line in the closing minutes, but Garrett Palmer's 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining was wide to the left.

Noble, playing in front of a large contingent of friends and family from Barstow, recorded his sixth 100-yard game of the season and 14th in 18 career starts (he finished his Mustang career with 17 100-yard games), netting exactly 100 yards on 25 carries. Barden caught three passes from Brennan, who completed four of 13 passes for 80 yards.

Defensively, Shotwell's four sacks were a Division I school record, and he finished with 12 total tackles, the 22nd time in his career he has reached double digits in tackles.

Fast forward just 22 months to the rematch.

San Diego State grabbed a 27-26 lead with seven minutes remaining. Cal Poly turned the ball over on downs with 4:24 to play but regained possession on its own 33-yard line with 3:39 remaining.

Quarterback Jonathan Dally marched the Mustangs 63 yards to the Aztecs' 4-yard line. Completions to Barden spanning 13 and 10 yards plus a 29-yard run by Noble set the stage for Gardner's game-winning kick.

Cal Poly outgained San Diego State 483-379 in total offense and produced a 16-minute advantage in time of possession.

Noble finished with 89 yards on 11 carries while Ryan Mole added 84 yards on 12 trips, scoring a touchdown on an eight-yard run in the second quarter. Dally completed 12 of 21 passes for 220 yards and one score, a 22-yarder to Barden, and also plunged one yard for another score.

Gardner opened the fourth quarter with a 23-yard field goal for a 26-21 Cal Poly lead and the Mustangs also scored a safety in the first quarter.

Cal Poly finished 7-4 in 2006 and 8-3 in 2008.
