Rating the significant hires in college football using analytics - OregonLive

Dave Bartoo, co-founder of Matrix Analytical, joined me on the radio show to talk about the hires across college football. I asked him to rank them, and talk about the numbers.

Bartoo on Joe Moorhead to Oregon as offensive coordinator:

“Solid — very very solid… we’ve had him ranked in the FCS programs as the No. 1 play caller in the eastern region. That’s why Penn State picked him up…. we had him graded as an A- play caller.”

On Nick Rolovich to Washington State as head coach:

“He was No. 1 on our board. Just in case (athletic director) Pat Chun was going to give us a call, Rolovich was No. 1 on the board. No question whatsoever. From the West Coast, had huge success as a play caller… not only do you get a guy who has turned a program around who has shown he can call plays at a high level.”

On Mike Leach to Mississippi State as head coach:

“I expect him to do what he’s always done, that’s take teams with lesser talent in their division and get them in the Top 25.”

On Jimmy Lake promoted to head coach at Washington:

“Don’t put the bar too high… if I’m Jimmy Lake or if I’m a fan, I’m trying not to put too much pressure on Jimmy Lake. Chris Petersen was one of the great coaches of the last two decades.”

On Marcus Arroyo to UNLV as head coach:

“Ducks win, UNLV loses… when it comes down to it, I’m going to fade the results because I haven’t seen the consistency that tells me it’s going to work.”

On Lane Kiffin to Ole Miss as head coach:

“It doesn’t work. Did it work at USC? Did it work at Tennessee? Did it work in Oakland? What people don’t realize is that he underperformed the talent at FAU. The difference between Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach, per year is 2.5 wins per year.”
