For the second straight offseason, Tennessee football punter Joe Doyle is entering the transfer portal. Doyle follows place kicker Brent Cimaglia, who entered the portal on Friday, as the first two players to officially enter the portal upon the hiring of Josh Heupel as head coach. They also both happen to be special teams players.
In 2018, Doyle was the Vols’ starting punter, and he held that position midway through 2019. However, Paxton Brooks eventually won the job from him, and Doyle has only served as the holder on field goals ever since then.
Currently a redshirt junior, Doyle entered the portal in January of 2020 before returning in August. David Ubben of The Athletic initially reported Doyle’s decision to enter the portal this time Saturday afternoon on Twitter.
Tennessee punter Joe Doyle has entered the transfer portal, @TheAthleticCFB has learned.
Doyle was a freshman All-American in 2018 but entered the portal after the 2019 season and returned to the team in 2020. He served mostly as a holder this season and didn’t attempt a punt.

A local product out of Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn., Doyle averaged 41.1 yards per punt on 65 punts and downed 23 punts inside the 20-yard line with 12 punts going 50 yards or more as a redshirt freshman in 2018.
He only punted 21 times in 2019, averaging 41.4 yards per punt, before losing his job to Brooks permanently. In 2020, Doyle did not have any punts. However, he was the full-time holder for Cimaglia in all 10 games.
Without Doyle, Tennessee football could still potentially have a holder in Brett Graham. His status is uncertain, as he was a graduate transfer senior punter in 2020 from the UConn Huskies, but given the NCAA’s eligibility ruling on players in 2020, he could definitely come back. If not, Heupel will have to find a new full-time holder.
Brooks is, at this point, still the punter, and when healthy, he is one of the best in the league. This past year, he averaged 43.6 yards per punt on 49 punts, pinning 17 inside the 20 and sending 13 of them 50 yards or more, including one punt that went 61 yards. He is also the kickoff specialist and has been for the past three years.
