COLUMBUS, Ohio -- One of the enduring visuals of Ohio State football’s season-ending loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl last month was not a touchdown pass or run or emphatic tackle.
It came when sophomore cornerback Shaun Wade walked from the Buckeyes’ sideline to the locker room after being ejected in the second quarter. That automatic disqualification accompanied the targeting call, which was triggered and assessed by the replay booth.
Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said last Wednesday that he attended the American Football Coaches Association head coaches meeting a day earlier, and targeting was a topic of conversation.
Day deferred to AFCA executive director Todd Berry to comment on the nature of those conversations. However, Day said he felt the targeting penalty needed to be “looked at” for the future.
Specifically, Day wondered if the ejection mechanism could be handled in a different way.
“It’s certainly a difficult thing at times to officiate, as we all know,” Day said. "It’s in there for the right reasons. But there is some gray area there that’s sometimes hard. I totally get that.
“But I definitely think the walk of shame, where the guy, he gets done, he walks off the field — I don’t think that that’s right.”
The AFCA annually makes suggestions to the NCAA about potential rules changes. For instance, the organization helped bring about the four-game redshirt rule in 2018.
Last year, the AFCA supported a proposal to redefine the penalty as Targeting 1 or Targeting 2, with Targeting 1 carrying only a 15-yard penalty and no ejection. Players who receive multiple Targeting 2 penalties could face suspension.
Since 2019 was not an NCAA legislative year, that proposal could come to a vote prior to the 2020 season.
Buckeyes in Shrine Game
It wasn’t enough to lift his West team to a victory, but former Ohio State receive Binjimen Victor was on the receiving end of one of the biggest plays of Saturday’s East-West Shrine Bowl.
Victor hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from North Texas quarterback Mason Fine on a flea flicker in the third quarter. Victor went up in traffic at the front of the end to make the catch.
Victor finished with 50 yards on two receptions.
Another former Buckeye, offensive lineman Branden Bowen, also played for the West.
Mack to Senior Bowl
Wide receiver Austin Mack joined the group of former Buckeyes pledged to play in Saturday’s Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
Mack totaled 361 yards and three touchdowns on 27 receptions in 11 games as a senior.
Wide receiver K.J. Hill, defensive tackle DeVon Hamilton and linebacker Malik Harrison will also play in Saturday’s game. Cornerback Damon Arnette Jr. previously accepted an invitation but is no longer listed on the Senior Bowl rosters.
NFL Network will broadcast the 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
Punter helps Aussies
Ohio State punter Drue Chrisman posted on Twitter on Saturday that he is raising money for the Australian brushfires. The fires have reportedly killed more than two dozen people and hundreds of thousands of animals.
