The college football playoff news has been hot and heavy over the last couple of days, and now we are learning what the recommended model may look like.
Sources tell me & @ByPatForde that the CFP working group is recommending a 12-team playoff: 6 highest-ranked conference champs & 6 at-large.
The 4 highest-ranked champs get a bye while other 8 play 1st-round games on campus.
Long way from done, but this is the recommendation.

The recommendation is a 12 team model with the 6 highest rated conference champions, and 6 at-large bids. The 4 highest will have a bye for the first round while the 8 other teams will pair up for a first round battle ON CAMPUS.
Of course, for Notre Dame, this particular language means that the status quo of their independence will never allow them to have a first round bye — even if they are #1 and 12-0.
Is this enough to force Notre Dame’s hand into joining the ACC fulltime? The recommendation certainly allows for easier access for the Irish to get in the playoff, but the path becomes much harder (although you can mark me down for foaming at the mouth for the Florida Gators to come up to South Bend in December for a game).
If this holds true, Notre Dame will finally be elbowed out of the same access as the Alabama’s and Ohio State’s of the world. Is this enough to drop the independence status?
