The Texas A&M Football team has a telling year ahead of them. They’ll look to establish themselves with some consistency in the college football world for the first time since the mid-1900s.

But with the team’s recent success comes a handful of players transferring out of the program. There were no problems and no high-profile transfers, but a handful of guys who never found their way into a starting role in College Station.

One of those guys was Derrick Tucker, a former 4-star safety who was ranked among the best players in his class in 2017.

Tucker entered the transfer portal just over a month ago, presumably due to a lack of playing time. In a crowded secondary, he just wasn’t able to rise to the top. He’ll likely be a standout player, as he is transferring to a much smaller school.

Texas A&M Football S Derrick Tucker announced his intention to transfer to Tennessee State

Tucker won’t have to go too far, as he recently announced that he’ll be transferring to Tennessee State, an FCS school that hasn’t found success recently but could bounce back with a big-name head coaching hire in Eddie George.

Tucker should be an immediate standout and a huge bonus for this Tennessee State team, which is looking to turn the tables after going 2-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2020.

With Tucker gone, the Aggies’ secondary won’t change much. The starters are still mostly intact, with the safety position highlighted by names like Leon O’Neal, Keldrick Carper, and Demani Richardson, all of whom have NFL aspirations.

This will be an extremely experienced unit and should only improve from last season. The Aggies also have a very talented group of cornerbacks, with Myles Jones, Jaylon Jones, and Elijah Blades leading the charge.

This Aggies secondary will be no joke, as the Texas A&M Football team may look to lean more heavily on the experienced unit with a couple of key run-stopping losses in Bobby Brown III and Buddy Johnson, both of whom are now in the NFL.

It should be another strong defensive season for the Texas A&M Football team in 2021.
