It’s no secret to say that this year’s draft class is loaded at the wide receiver position, but just how many of those receivers fit the profile of what the Packers are looking for?
Some context: analysts have deduced based on the Packers’ draft history that they tend to favor cornerbacks and receivers who meet certain height-weight-speed thresholds.
Packer Report’s Ross Uglem asked Brian Gutekunst exactly this question at the combine, referencing Jaire Alexander as an undersized “tendency breaker.”
“(Alexander) was just above the Mendoza Line,” Gutekunst quipped.
Still, there are receivers who may not fit the Packers’ traditional physical benchmarks – publicly ill-defined as they are – but could be excellent playmakers in their own right.
Gutekunst seems open-minded on the question.
“You’re always bigger, stronger, faster if you can be,” Gutekunst said. “But it’s always about the football player and whether they can play. Every player has different attributes that makes them who they are, and if a guy doesn’t have the height that we certainly would like, but he makes up for it in other ways. I don’t think we wouldn’t draft a player because he wasn’t tall enough.”
The Packers reportedly met with TCU’s Jalen Reagor at the combine; Reagor stands just 5-10 but plays bigger on film and also possesses the speed, quickness and ball skills to be an effective slot or boundary receiver.
Reagor’s frame actually compares well with former Packers receiver Randall Cobb, to whom Gutekunst pointed as an example of a smaller receiver the Packers selected.
“(Cobb) certainly didn’t meet some of the height requirements,” Gutekunst admitted.
“It’s really about what they can do for your football team, and obviously, with Matt’s (LaFleur) system, there are some tweaks in terms of what he does with the slot and stuff that may lend itself to different skillsets. But even in the past,, I don’t think we would have shied away from that.”
Does this mean an even smaller player, such as Penn State’s KJ Hamler, who stands at just 5-7 and weighs under 180 pounds, is draftable in the Packers’ eyes? That’s less clear, but with a new regime in place, including both coaching and front office, things may evolve.
