Former Alabama QB Blake Sims returns to professional football - 247Sports

It’s been six years since Blake Sims suited up for the Alabama Crimson Tide. After stints in the Canadian Football League and the NFL, Sims is back in professional football.

The former Alabama star was a part of two National Championship teams in 2012 and 2013. He led the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff Semi Finals in 2014, a loss to Ohio State.

For the 2020 season, Sims is headed indoors for his next team.

The Spokane Shock of the Indoor Football League, also formerly of the now closed down, long-time Arena Football League, signed Sims to represent the Shock out west.

The Shock, who won the Arena Bowl in the AFL in 2010, are looking to bring home another championship to Washington. Sims becomes one of the more high profile names to join the league.

In three seasons, one as a starter, with Alabama, Sims passed for 3,731 yards, 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In 2014, Sims broke the single season passing record for yards in school history (3,487 yards), eventually passed by Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 (3,966 yards), 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

After college, Sims went undrafted and ended up in Canada playing for the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders (2015). After Canada, Sims took a chance and went to Australia to play football.

No, he did not play Australian Rules Football, but actually signed with the Wollongong Devils of the National Gridiron League. The league was formed originally in 2014 and set to begin in 2016, but was later postponed until 2018. After going silent and releasing no new information, the league never came off the ground and no games were ever played. Sims ended up back in the United States and earned a chance with an NFL squad.

He spent time on the practice squads of the Atlanta Falcons (2016) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016-17). Sims never suited up in the NFL but signed with the Birmingham Iron of the now defunct Alliance of American Football in 2019. It appeared the XFL was not an option, so Sims took his talents to the indoor game.

The IFL is one of three professional indoor football leagues still active at the highest level of the profession. They are based mostly on the West Coast with some franchises in the Midwest while the National Arena League (East Coast) and American Arena League (Midwest and East Coast) operate elsewhere.

The IFL’s inaugural season took place in 2009 and the 2020 season will feature 13 franchises. The current franchises include the Shock, Arizona Rattlers, Bismark Bucks, Cedar Rapids River Kings, Duke City Gladiators, Frisco Fighters, Green Bay Blizzard, Iowa Barnstormers, Oakland Panthers (owned by former Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, and Las Vegas Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch), Quad City Steamwheelers (Illinois), San Diego Strike Force, Sioux Falls Storm and the Tuscon Sugar Skulls.
