(Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)The Navy football team shared some heartbreaking news this Saturday morning, as senior offensive lineman David Forney passed away on Thursday night after being found unresponsive in his dorm room. He was just 22 years old.
Forney was a key contributor for the Midshipmen this past season, starting all 13 games at offensive guard. The offensive line for Navy was the main reason why the program led the country in rushing with 360.5 yards per game.
Another member of the Midshipmen found Forney on late Thursday night. His death has understandably left the United States Naval Academy heartbroken. Ken Niumatalolo, the head coach of the Navy football program, released a statement on the loss of one his players.
“Words cannot express our pain and sorrow,” Niumatalolo said. “First and foremost, our deepest condolences to the Forney family. The Navy Football Brotherhood is not a team, we are a family. We are devastated to have lost one of our brothers. We all loved – and will always love – David. We pray for strength during this most difficult time.”

Forney started 39-straight games over the past three years for the Midshipmen. He would have graduated this May and was assigned to commission as a cryptologic warfare officer.
At this moment, a cause of death hasn’t been announced.
