Mountain West announces 2020 football schedule for Utah State - Cache Valley Daily

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s 2020 Mountain West football schedule was announced Thursday by the conference office as the Aggies enter their eighth season in the league. In all, USU will play its eight conference games during an eight-week stretch from Oct. 10 through Nov. 28.

Thursday’s release represents the first phase in the 2020 football schedule process. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports and Fox Sports will now initiate a selection procedure, which will include the shifting of particular games to non-Saturday dates. That will be followed by the identification of network outlets and kick times.

Utah State’s 2020 Mountain West schedule will include home games against San Diego State (10/10), New Mexico (10/24), Fresno State (11/14) and Air Force (11/28), and road games at Boise State (10/17), Nevada (10/31), Wyoming (11/7) and Colorado State (11/21). USU will also have one bye during the season on the last weekend of September.

Utah State will start the 2020 season with back-to-back home games for the first time since 2012, for just the fifth time in the past 66 years and for the 28th time in school history. USU will then play consecutive road games over a three-week period, with a bye in between, before beginning Mountain West play. Utah State will alternate home and road contests for all but one week of league play as it will have back-to-back road games in late October and early November. USU will then end its regular season at home for the first time since 2015.

Utah State opens the season with back-to-back non-conference home games as it hosts Washington State on Thursday, Sept. 3, and Southern Utah on Saturday, Sept. 12. USU is 1-2 all-time against the Cougars and 4-0 all-time against the Thunderbirds. Furthermore, the game against Washington State will mark just the fifth time in school history that a Pac-12 school has played in Logan as USU defeated Utah in 2012 in overtime (27-20), lost to sixth-ranked Oregon in 2001 (38-21), lost to Oregon State in 1998 (20-16) and lost to WSU in 1950 (46-6).

Utah State’s first road game of the season will be the following weekend at Washington on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the fourth-ever meeting between the Aggies and Huskies. Following its only bye of the year, USU will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule at BYU on Friday, Oct. 2, in what is the second-oldest rivalry in school history with 89 previous meetings.

Utah State will then begin eight-straight weeks of conference games with a home matchup against San Diego State on Saturday, Oct. 10, in what will be the 14th meeting between the two programs. Overall, it will be the fifth time that USU starts Mountain West play at home as the Aggies are 6-1 all-time in MW openers, including a 3-1 home record.

Following its league opener, Utah State will play at defending Mountain West champion Boise State on Saturday, Oct. 17, followed by a home game against New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 24. The Broncos are USU’s 15th-oldest rivalry with 24 previous meetings, while the Lobos are USU’s 13th-oldest rivalry with 26 previous meetings.

Utah State will then play back-to-back road games at Nevada and at Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 7, respectively. USU will be facing the Wolf Pack for the 26th time, in what is the 14th-most played rivalry in school history, while its game against the Cowboys will be the 71st meeting, in what is the Aggies’ fourth-oldest rivalry.

Utah State returns home for the first time in November as it hosts Fresno State on Saturday, Nov. 14, followed by its last road game of the year at Colorado State on Saturday, Nov. 21. The Aggies and Bulldogs will be meeting for the 32nd time in what is the 11th-most played rivalry in school history, while the Rams are USU’s third-oldest rivalry with 76 previous meetings.

Utah State will then conclude Mountain West play and the regular season at home against Air Force on Saturday, Nov. 28, in what will be the eighth meeting in series history.

The 2020 schedule will play out over 14 weeks, concluding on Saturday, Dec. 5, with the Mountain West Football Championship Game to be played at the home stadium of the highest-ranked of the two divisional champions.

The 2020 Mountain West football membership includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming in the Mountain Division and Fresno State, Hawai’i, Nevada, San Diego State, San José State and UNLV in the West Division.
