History of Hasbrouck Heights Football: Disappointment at Giants Stadium - TAPinto.net

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - A disappointing start.  A bad finish. Nothing but great football in-between in 2005.

Highly rated coming into the season, the Aviators stubbed their toe right off the bat, dropping the season opener, 26-25 to Ridgefield at Depken Field, in a game that included a 30-minute delay as officials reviewed the rule book on a play that eventually overruled a Ridgefield touchdown, after the referees decided what the rule was concerning "inadvertent whistles.

Dan D’Amato started the season off with a 52-yard run for the Aviators first score, Brandon Melchior’s conversion made the score 7-0.  Jeff Seidel had an 80-yard run as the Aviators retook the lead at 13-7 in a game that would see-saw the rest of the way. Bryan Fill had a pair of two-yard scoring runs as the Aviators took a 25-19 lead into the half.

Both teams settled their defenses down at the half, and Ridgefield scored the second half’s only touchdown, in the third quarter, to squeeze bye the Aviators 26-25.

There would be no slipup Week 2, as Seidel rushed for three touchdowns, and Gareffa scored two, as the Aviators pounded Park Ridge, 40-6. Seidel scored from 48, 4 and 10 yards while Brendan Gareffa scored on a 14 yard pass from Jamie Pasqualone and on a 6-year run.  Dom D’Alessandro added a 52-yard run for the Aviators other score.

Next would be a trip to New Milford, where the explosive offense continued in a 52-24 win over the Knights.  Seidel had three more touchdowns (bringing his season total to eight in three games) and rushed for 179 yards, while Pasqualone threw two long touchdown passes (40, 45 yards) to lead the offense.  D’Amato added two rushing touchdowns for the Aviators, while Fill and Ruroede were on the receiving end of Pasqualone’s scoring strikes.

Palisades Park was next, and the trip down Route 80 did not slow the Aviators much, as they rolled to a 40-6 victory.  Seidel had two more scoring runs (17,13) as did D’Amato (9,15) to key the win, as the Aviators offense continued to dominate teams on the ground.  Gareffa added a 20-yard touchdown and Jonathan Paige recovered a fumble in the end zone for a defensive score.

Group 4 foe Bergen Tech did little to slow the offense down, as the Aviators handed the Knights a 42-20 loss.   Seidel added three touchdowns while picking up 199 on the ground, as the Aviators were tested for the first time since their opening day loss.  Down 14-7 at the half, the Aviators exploded for 35 second half points in picking up the win.

Seidel scored the opening touchdown in the first quarter on a 68 yard run, but Bergen Tech bounced back with two second quarter touchdowns to lead 14-7 at halftime.  Hasbrouck Heights scored all 21 points in the third quarter, as Seidel powered in from 25 and returned a blocked punt 10 yards, to regain the lead for the Aviators, and take control of momentum. D’Amato stretched the lead to 28-14 at the end of three with a  27 yard run. Gareffa had two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, sandwiching a Bergen Tech score, to clinch the Hasbrouck Heights victory.

Cresskill threw a scare into Hasbrouck Heights the next week, leading 12-0 at halftime.  Pasqualone led the comeback through the air, hitting Sean Mansfield for a 48-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 12-7.  Fill scored from 9 out to give the Aviators a 13-12 lead before Pasqualone struck again, connecting with D’Amato on an 80-yard touchdown to give the Aviators an insurance score.

After two straight battles, Emerson provided little pushback as the Aviators jumped out to a 40-0 lead en route to a 47-0 victory. Seidel scored four times, a pass reception, an interception, and two rushing touchdowns to lead the way.  Pasqualone connected with Seidel for a 47-yard touchdown for the game’s first score. After Pasqualone hit Ruroede for a 12-yard touchdown, Seidel returned an interception 15 yards to give Heights a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. Zack Ketcho returned a blocked punt 10 yards for the Aviators final score of the first half.  Seidel scored twice in the second, on 41 and 46 yard runs, as the Aviators extended the lead to 40-0 at the half,

Dave Palmieri added the Aviators lone score in the second half.

Hasbrouck Heights traveled to Bogota to face the division’s best defense, but it did not take long for Seidel to breakthrough 56 seconds into the game for a 62-yard touchdown on the way to a 177-yard night in the Aviators 41-7 win over the Bucs.  Seidel scored three times on the ground, and D’Amato scored on a 70-yard run as the Aviators jumped out to a 27-0 lead in a battle of 6-1 teams.

Pasqualone ran for a score and threw for one, hitting Fill for a nine yard touchdown

With the win, the Aviators were seeded second in the NJSIAA playoffs, and opened at Depken Field against Mountain Lakes.

After a scoreless first quarter, Pasqualone’s arm took over, hitting Fill for a 24 yard score, and Seidel for an eight yard touchdown to give the Aviators a 14-0 lead over Mountain Lakes.  His 39-yard hookup with Ruroede was all the scoring would need as the Aviators blanked the Lakers, 21-0 for the second shutout in three games.

Next up was a rematch with Bogota.  Once again, Seidel struck early, this time for 65 yards on the first play the Aviators ran on offense. Bogota struck right back, scoring on a 92-yard pass from quarterback Jimmy Lynch to Danny Bowen to cut the lead to 7-6.  The Bucs took the lead when Lynch hit Ray Carrasco for a 27-yard touchdown to make the score 14-7 Bogota.

Seidel, who rushed for 200 yards on the day, evened the score with a 47-yard scoring run in the second quarter.   On the first possession of the third quarter, Fill gave the Aviators the lead for good, plunging in from two yards out for a 21-14 Heights lead.

Seidel’s 45 yard punt return set up the Aviators next score., as Paqualone scored from two yards out as Heights extended their lead to 28-14.  Bogota, was not done though, fighting back to cut the lead back to a touchdown, as Carrasco and Lynch hooked up for a 12-yard score.

Seidel finished the day scoring from 15 yards away to put the game out of reach for the Bucs.

But before the Aviators would travel to Giants Stadium to play Pompton Lakes, Wood-Ridge awaited on Thanksgiving.  Seidel handled the Blue Devils, rushing for 146 yards in the first half and two touchdowns as the Aviators won 28-14. Seider, who did not play in the second half, raised his season totals to 21 touchdowns with 1609 rushing yards.

Gareffa scored for 21 yards to in between Seidel’s two touchdowns, as the Aviators led 21-0 at the half. Dom D’Allessandro scored from 25 for the Aviators.  Wood-Ridge’s Chris Gomez scored twice in the fourth quarter, on runs of 19 and 5 yards to account for the Blue Devils offense.

Seidel rushed for 17 times for 131 yards, but it was not enough for the Aviators, who lost 27-7 to Pompton Lakes in the final at a “windswept” Giants Stadium.  The Aviators were unable to complete a pass on the day, and Pompton Lakes made the plays to walk away with the title. Missed opportunities was the story, best exemplified by a sequence where the Aviators took over at mid-field late in the first half.

Three straight incompletions turned the ball back to Pompton Lakes, who scored with 52 second remaining in the half for a 13-0 lead.  Still the Aviators hung around, and when they recovered a fumble at the Pompton Lakes 43, looked poised to make a move. But the Cardinals intercepted the ensuing pass and returned it 67 yards for a 20-0 lead.

“Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda,” Hasbrouck Heights head coach Nick Delcalzo told the media after the game.  “But we didn’t.”

Gareffa scored late in the fourth quarter for the only Aviators points on the day.

Seidel was joined as a First Team All County selection by guard Joe Armeli and defensive lineman Anthony Yeswita.  Fill was a Second Team choice at the tight end spot. Center Brandon Melchoir (who handled the kicking chores all year as well) was named to First Team BCSL-Olympic team along with Luke Ruroede (defensive back). Second Team All League selections in included  tackle Chris Barone, linebacker Bobby Calderone, running back Dan D’Amato, defensive lineman Mike DiSimone, quarterback Jamie Pasqualone. Brendan Gareffa and Jonathan Paige were Honorable Mention selections.
