New CU football coach will keep four assistants on staff, including Chiaverini - The Denver Channel

BOULDER, Colo. – New University of Colorado football coach Karl Dorrell will keep four CU assistants on his staff, including Darrin Chiaverini, who was the interim head coach between Dorrell's hiring and former coach Mel Tucker's departure and a highly-regarded recruiter.

The CU athletic department said Thursday that in addition to Chiaverini, Dorrell will keep assistants Darian Hagan, Brian Michalowski and Tyson Summers on his staff, though their exact positions won’t be determined until after Dorrell fills the six other vacancies.

CU said the new coach hoped to have his staff filled “sometime early next week” and said he was researching and interviewing candidates as he meets with every player on the team’s roster.

Chiaverini was Tucker’s assistant head coach and receivers coach in his fourth year with the team. Hagan was in his fourth year as the running backs coach after a prior stint at the same position – and both played four seasons at CU themselves.

Last year was the first season at CU for Summers, who was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach, and for Michalowski, who coached outside linebackers.

In his introductory news conference on Monday, Dorrell said becoming the 27th CU football coach was his “dream job” and he pledged to compile a staff that could put the Buffs in the run for a national championship.
