When 247Sports national recruiting writer Charles Power was breaking down Clemson's ascension under coach Dabo Swinney, he pointed to the Tigers' recruiting success at two position groups. Clemson's ability to find game-changing quarterbacks through the recruiting process, and the Tigers' tenacity at producing elite defensive line recruits yielded elite results, Power said.
And that tracks across other teams and programs as well: Teams that can win battles for blue-chippers at quarterback and blue-chip players who can get after the quarterback are often the ones left standing in the College Football Playoff.
“This is anecdotal, but the recruiting rankings back it up—if you watch important college football games starting with the conference championships and on into the College Football Playoff, the two position groups that consistently lead to game-changing sequences are the quarterbacks and defensive line,” Power said. “With the defensive line, think about we've seen the Clemson and Alabama fronts control the line of scrimmage in these playoff games. Oklahoma struggled to block Clemson in 2015 or Alabama in 2017. I think about how Da'Ron Payne wrecked game plans in the 2016 playoff. The ability for a team to control the line of scrimmage and affect the quarterback — or have a quarterback who can make big-time individual plays — leads to championships.”
Think about LSU's championship run: For all the Tigers' talent all over the field, LSU landed a former four-star quarterback through the transfer process in Joe Burrow, who put up arguably the greatest season at the position the sport has seen. And the defense lined up with Rashard Lawrence (No. 23 overall in the 247Sports Composite, a five-star), K'Lavon Chaisson (No. 37, technically a linebacker, but an edge player), Tyler Shelvin (No. 54) and Glen Logan (No. 156).
So which teams are recruiting the best at those positions moving forward? Interestingly enough, a recent national champion just barely missed the list, while a few teams that have been mediocre of late have laid the groundwork at those key spots.
