Phillip Fulmer's idea for expanding playoff makes a lot of sense - atozsportsnashville.com

Tennessee Vols athletic director Phillip Fulmer appeared on the Paul Finebaum show on Monday afternoon and the topic of expanding the College Football Playoff was broached.

Fulmer said when he was coaching he felt like the system was fine the way it was (the BCS), but now the UT athletic director says he’s “almost” to the point where he thinks it might not be a bad idea to expand.

I’ve been pretty staunch in my support of the current setup. I think a college football championship is a bit different than a college basketball championship, due to the length of the season. One game during the year can make or break a team’s chances to win it all. Essentially, college football is the one sport where you have to be good all season long to even have a chance to win championship. There is no “getting hot at the right time”.

But the proposal Fulmer made actually makes some sense.

Fulmer suggested a 12 team playoff where the 9-12 seeds play the 5-8 seeds for the opportunity to play the top four seeds.

I think that’s an idea that makes a ton of sense and would be incredibly entertaining. It would help weed out some of the top 12 teams that probably don’t deserve a chance to play for the championship. And it would likely save us from some blowout games. Plus it would give us another round of entertaining matchups.

Just this year we would’ve had these matchups:

5. Georgia vs 12. Auburn

6. Oregon vs 11. Utah

7. Baylor vs 10 Penn State

8. Wisconsin vs 9. Florida

I’d be down for that.

Of course the only downside here is that if a team from the 5-12 seeds advanced to the final four, they’d be playing 16 games in a season.

Bowl tie-ins are something else that would have to be figured out. But I actually like the theory of this and I think it could work for college football. Maybe even start the first round of games in mid-December, to help us through that brutal multi-week period where no college football is played.

By the way, it’s no surprise Fulmer is for an expanded playoff now. Would you expect anything else from an athletic director?
