Mr. Football runner-up Kris Abrams-Draine no longer considers himself an Ole Miss commit.
The senior, who led Spanish Fort to the Class 6A title game last month, told AL.com on Monday he likely will decide between Nebraska, Oregon, Missouri and Florida State before National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
“With the coaching change at Ole Miss, I think he decided to look elsewhere,” Toros head coach Ben Blackmon said. “He’s got some visits set up. We’ll see exactly what comes of that in the next month or so.”
Abrams-Draine, a wide receiver who played quarterback for most of his senior season out of necessity, said he has not talked to anyone on the Ole Miss staff since Lane Kiffin succeeded Matt Luke as head coach.
He visited Nebraska this past weekend and has a visit to Florida State set up on Jan. 31. He said he will visit either Oregon – where former Spanish Fort teammate D.J. James signed last year – or Missouri this weekend.
“After I take those visits, I’ll know,” he said.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Abrams-Draine said he liked what he saw in Nebraska this weekend. He said head coach Scott Frost’s staff has talked to him about playing slot receiver.
“I got a good feel there,” he said. “I liked coach Frost. I liked the players I met. I think when people think of Nebraska, they think there is not a lot to do there, but that is not the case.”
Abrams-Draine is one of the top unsigned 2020 prospects in the state. He was named the Class 6A Back of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association last week and also was the AL.com Coastal Alabama Player of the Year and the AL.com Super All-State Player of the Year.
“He is just a very special player,” Blackmon said. “Kris is a phenomenal football player in all facets. He can really play any skill position on the field and excel at it, and I think he showed that this year. He’s a very special talent – one this state may not see again for a while.”
After two All-State seasons at receiver, Abrams-Draine moved to quarterback after two games in 2019. He rushed for 1,745 yards and 19 TDs on 154 carries and also passed for 723 yards and 9 TDs. On defense, he intercepted two passes and returned both for scores.
“It was like a movie,” he said of the season. “We started slow. We lost five games. We haven’t lost that many in like six years. We barely made the playoffs, went to overtime the first round and then went all the way to state and barely lost. It was amazing.”
Abrams-Draine’s run in the playoffs also was amazing. In five games, he rushed for 1,089 yards and 12 TDs. He also passed for 160 yards and two scores, returned an interception for a touchdown, caught a 27-yard pass and returned a punt 34 yards.
“My offensive line and the game plan by our coaches was the difference,” he said. “We knew everyone would stack the box against us. I would sometimes have to read two players and then (tailback) Johnny (Morris) or I would have to make a guy miss. Coach Blackmon and the staff did a great job of preparing us.”
Unfortunately, Abrams-Draine didn’t get to take the last snaps for his team at quarterback. He left the championship game – a 14-13 loss to Oxford -- with less than four minutes remaining with a knee injury. He was injured while playing defense. He had successful surgery for a torn meniscus the next week and said recovery is going well.
“I’m feeling good,” he said. “I’ll be at 100 percent in a month or so.”
