It's January, which means way-too-early rankings are coming at you in rapid succession and optimism is abundant for 2020 with spring practice on the horizon.
Here's another precursor to next season, a glimpse at five teams who finished unranked and another squad that slipped in the final Top 25 following an impressive bowl performance. Could one of these national title longshots have a say in how respective conference championships are decided?
We think so.
When searching for darkhorse candidates nationally, you look at several factors — returning talent, incoming players, coaching expertise and perhaps most importantly, schedule favorability.
Some spunk doesn't hurt, either.
“We’ve got a spot in the Kentucky Derby," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said last week. "We’re in Gate No. 4. We’ve got a lot of training in order to do it. We’re going to be in the race. Now we’ve got to take care of our business over the next nine months, and that’s really what it’s about. Some years you can’t be in the race, a lot of things can hurt you. But we’ve got a spot.
"Now we’ve got a chance, to put the work in.”
Here are six potential sleepers you should keep an eye on entering spring practice a few weeks from now and moving forward in 2020:
