
Booster support, manageable buyouts and national trajectory are a few of the many items that impact the decision-making process when programs discuss coaching retention at the end of every season.
Perception is reality in college football and being stagnant can cripple recruiting efforts as well as directly affect fanbase morale heading into the offseason, moments in which future games are ultimately won during periods of roster-building, philosophical study and player development.
Outside of the perennial powers at the top of the polls, there are a few Power 5 programs on the cusp who are at a crossroads of sorts exiting the 2019 campaign. We'll keep the pressure off first-year coaches for the time being and instead focus on the teams with show-me seasons ahead in 2020, whether that's with a long-tenured leader on the sideline or someone nearing the end of his welcome.
Only a couple of these teams will be ranked in August, but all will be expected to win and at least meet program expectations and establish momentum. It's important too for these teams to alter outside narratives and play with a consistent level of poise not necessarily shown during the previous season.
