Penn State predicts potential timeline to prepare for football - 247Sports

It’s not a set in stone date by any means, but we might have a rough idea of the latest college football teams would be able to go before needing to get back on the practice field in order to have a 2020 college football season.

On Thursday afternoon, Penn State vice president of Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour told reporters that she thought the Nittany Lion football program would probably need 60 days to be ready to play a season.

"We've relied on our sport science folks, strength and conditioning, what we call our performance team, our head team physician, to really look at this from a health and safety standpoint," Barbour said.

As it sits right now, college football has not been delayed because of the spread of the coronavirus and is still on schedule to begin as planned. However, the college football season is starting to look like it could be in danger as more sporting events are canceled or postponed.

On March 27, the Big Ten announced that it was extending the suspension of all organized team activities through May 4, 2020.

“This is an additional measure to the previously announced cancellation of all conference and non-conference competitions through the end of the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic year,” the conference said in a statement. “The Conference also has previously announced a moratorium on all on- and off-campus recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.”

If Barbour’s 60-day estimation were to become the set deadline, schools like Penn State that start their 2020 seasons on September 5, 2020, would have to be back to organized team activities by Tuesday, July 7, 2020, in order to reach the 60-day window. However, some teams would need more time to prepare.

Notre Dame, UCLA, Navy, Arizona, Hawai’i, New Mexico, New Mexico State, UNLV, Cal, Nevada, UC Davis and Idaho State all begin their seasons on August 29, 2020, in what has become known as, “Week Zero.” Those schools would need to be back to organized team activities by Tuesday, June 30, 2020 in order to hit the 60-day window.

Ways to combat catching COVID-19 include self-quarantining from others, washing hands, avoiding hand to hand or physical contact with others. Coronavirus spreads between people in close contact with one another, typically within six feet, or through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Spread is still possible before people show symptoms, although that does not stand as the typical cause, according to the CDC.

Large, crowded areas should be avoided as movie theaters, work conferences and other traffic-heavy events are being shut down across the country per state jurisdictions at the urging of the CDC. Disneyland in California, as well as Disney World and Universal Studios theme parks in Orlando, Florida, all closed their gates to visitors in mid-March amid coronavirus concerns.
