The 2020 NFL draft has come and gone, after months of anticipation, particularly over the last few weeks with sports gone, the draft provided a breath of fresh air to all football fans. If you followed along over the last few days, the draft was a huge success for the University of Utah, as Kyle Whittingham's program.
Utah had seven players drafted within the seven-round event. Jaylon Johnson was the first Utah player off the board going in the second round. Which preceded a run of Utes selected in round three with Julian Blackmon, Zack Moss, and Terrell Burgess. Utah finished up the draft with Leki Fotu, Bradlee Anae, and John Penisini all being taken on the final day of the draft.
With these results, over the coming weeks, we'll review how Utah stacks up compared to the rest of the division and conference, as well as the impact recruiting has had on the team and draft success.
Looking back over the last few years, Utah has developed a great number of players and have helped turn them into NFL Draft selections. At the same time, the program has seen an improved recruiting profile, which has resulted in the staff being able to land more higher rated prospects like Solomon Enis, Jordan Wilmore, Clark Phillips III, and Van Fillinger to name just a few. The Utes won their second straight outright South Division Title this past season, a result that comes from success on the recruiting trail and developing players in the program. And with that success and type of season they had, they also generated a lot of interest from the NFL with the prospects that will be entering the draft.
All in all, these three pillars of a football program - recruiting, on-field success, draft results - go hand-in-hand and work together to keep Whittingham's program trending upwards, which provides a rather encouraging sign that the future of Utah football will continue to rise. What's most encouraging is that Kyle Whittingham's program is trending up in nearly every aspect of a good college football program. The coaching staff has developed their players to the point that they've become the program with the most draft picks in the Pac-12 Conference over the last four years.
The amount of players being drafted has increased, just as the quality of recruit Utah is landing has also improved, and to add a third point, the amount of wins (keep in mind, it's the wins come from the year earlier, so the 2012 season = 2013 recruiting and draft class).

Utah may take a step back in 2021 on the field and in the draft, but the bar has been raised. The staff recruited at an elite level last year, securing their first ever top-3o signing class, and will rely on true freshmen like Clark Phillips III, Van Fillinger, Nate Ritchie and others to be significant contributors this season.
As we get deeper into the year, recruiting becomes more and more important. The good news for Ute fans, the staff has already secured their top target and cornerstone of the 2021 class in Peter Costelli. They will work to build this class around him and his future in Salt Lake City. The staff will continue add to the talent and raise the talent level within the program.
As Ute fans look towards the future, remember that the program just secured their second outright South Division title, and signed their highest rated class average and highest ranked class. They are winning more games, recruiting better athletes, and producing more NFL draft picks. Utah is trending up in every valuable way a football program can.
