Round 5, pick No. 155 to Bears

Trevis Gipson, Cedar Hill and Richardson Berkner

Trevis Gipson received zero Power Five scholarship offers before graduating from Cedar Hill.

The Tulsa defensive end still made it to the NFL.

The Chicago Bears drafted Gipson in Round 4 at No. 155 overall on Day 3.

Gipson played his first three high school seasons at Richardson Berkner before transferring to Cedar Hill to play for now-Baylor assistant Joey McGuire as a senior. He ranked No. 91 in the SportsDayHS Top 100 for the Class of 2015.

Gipson (6-4, 268 pounds) developed into an all-American Athletic Conference honoree at Tulsa. As a redshirt senior, he tallied 49 tackles (15 for a loss), eight sacks, six quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles in 12 games (11 starts).

Though a hamstring injury limited Gipson’s participation at the combine, he performed well at the Senior Bowl and Tulsa’s pro day before COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions canceled remaining evaluation events and in-person meetings.

Gipson’s selection adds to his family football tradition: The Raiders selected his grandfather, Tom, in the 14th round of the 1971 NFL draft.

Round 5, pick No. 172 to Lions

Jason Huntley, Arlington Martin

Running back Jason Huntley, formerly of Arlington Martin and New Mexico State, has been drafted Detroit Lions with the 172nd overall pick in Round 5.

Huntley was an all-district selection in the 2015 season when he was listed as one of two first-team running backs. He rushed for 938 yards and 11 touchdowns on 70 carries during his senior season with Arlington Martin. He was one of three backs to have at least 70 carries that season

The back was a composite two-star recruit, according to 247, when he signed with New Mexico State. He totaled 1,092 yards and nine rushing touchdowns in three years at the university.

Round 6, pick No. 180 to Bengals

Hakeem Adeniji, Garland

To say that Hakeem Adeniji wasn’t highly recruited coming out of Garland would be an understatement.

Adeniji didn’t receive a single star from Rivals in his high school recruiting rankings, and the website reported that his only offer was from Air Force.

Now he is headed to the NFL after the Cincinnati Bengals drafted him in the sixth round at No. 180 overall.

Adeniji originally signed with Air Force, but his medical waiver was denied and he was not eligible to attend the academy, according to The Kansas City Star.

The Star reported that a cashew allergy was the reason his admission was rejected, so Adeniji started taking summer school classes at Kansas, where his high school coach (Jeff Jordan) had become the director of personnel for the football team. Adeniji started every game in his career at Kansas, and his 48 consecutive starts tied a KU record.

The versatile 6-5, 300-pound Adeniji was a district champion in the shot put and discus at Garland, and he played on the offensive and defensive lines during his high school career. He stuck to offensive tackle at Kansas, and he was named first-team All-Big 12 by the conference coaches after helping KU average 377.3 yards of total offense as a senior in 2019.

Round 6, pick No. 201 to Ravens

James Proche, DeSoto

Former SMU and DeSoto wide receiver James Proche was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 201 overall pick in Round 6 of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Proche was one of the greatest wide receivers in Mustangs history, dropping just nine passes in his entire Mustangs career, according to Pro Football Focus. His 111 receptions in his senior season were the most in all of FBS, tied with LSU’s Justin Jefferson.
