USC'S Revised 2020 Football Schedule Announced - University of Southern California Official Athletic Site

Football | July 31, 2020

LOS ANGELES — USC's revised 2020 football schedule, featuring 10 games against conference-only opponents, has been announced by the Pac-12.

It features five home games in the Coliseum, with visits from California, Colorado, Washington State, Arizona State and Washington. The Trojans' road games will be at UCLA, Stanford, Arizona, Oregon and Utah (on a Friday night).

The schedule was revised and shortened by the Pac-12 to better deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The return-to-competition plans were determined following extensive consultation with the Pac-12's Medical Advisory Committee, with the health and safety of the student-athletes and those connected to Pac-12 sports as the number one priority. The Conference is prepared to adjust plans if the health situation changes. In addition, the Conference previously announced that Pac-12 student-athletes who choose not to participate in intercollegiate athletics during the coming academic year because of safety concerns about COVID-19 will continue to have their scholarships honored by their university and will remain in good standing with their team.

Initial information regarding tickets for USC's 2020 home football games has been communicated to season ticket holders. Additional details will be shared once guidance is issued by state and local public health officials regarding if fans can attend games in the Coliseum during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Game times and television plans for USC's 2020 games will be announced soon. All games will be nationally televised by either the ESPN channels, ABC, FOX, FOX Sports 1 or Pac-12 Networks.

USC's original 2020 schedule was comprised of 12 games that included 3 non-conference foes in addition to 9 league opponents.

The 9 Pac-12 teams that the Trojans were originally scheduled to play in 2020 remain on USC's new schedule, as do the previous home or road designations for those games, although the order of play has been changed. A home contest against Washington State has been added.

The last time USC played only 10 regular season games was in 1969, when the Trojans went 9-0-1 and then won the Rose Bowl. However, this will be the first time ever that USC plays a schedule composed only of conference opponents.

USC will now open its 2020 season on Sept. 26, three weeks later than the original schedule's start, with the flexibility if necessary to commence on a later date if the situation warrants.

USC visits crosstown rival UCLA on Sept. 26, the Trojans' latest home opener since 1950 (when they had a Sept. 29 start). This will be the sixth time since the series began in 1929 that the Trojans open a season versus UCLA (1929-30-43-44-45). This also will be the first time since 1930 that the rivalry has not been contested in November or December (the teams played twice in 1943-44-45, with the second meeting occurring in either November or December). This will be the earliest on the calendar that the USC-UCLA clash has been played since the 1945 game kicked off on Sept. 21.

USC next plays the Bay Area teams, first hosting California on Oct. 3 (Troy's latest home opener since 1992, when it was on Oct. 10) before heading to Stanford on Oct. 10. The Trojans welcome Colorado to the Coliseum on Oct. 17 and then go to Arizona on Oct. 24 before having a bye on Halloween (Oct. 31).

USC resumes play at home on Nov. 7 against Washington State (the teams did not meet in 2019). Troy then visits defending Pac-12 champion Oregon on Nov. 14 before Arizona State comes to Los Angeles on Nov. 21.

The Trojans next have a Friday night contest at defending Pac-12 South champion Utah on Nov. 27 of Thanksgiving weekend. USC concludes its regular season on Dec. 5 in the Coliseum versus Washington. It will be USC's latest regular season finish since the 2009 campaign also ended on Dec. 5.

Games that are unable to be played on their scheduled date can be made up in the bye week or on Dec. 12.

The 2020 Pac-12 Championship Game will be held on either Dec. 18 or 19 in a home-hosted model.

The only Pac-12 team that USC won't play in the 2020 regular season is Oregon State.

"We are pleased with today's Pac-12 announcement of revised scheduling details for 2020 fall sports," USC athletic director Mike Bohn and UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a statement issued jointly today.  "We understand the great interest in the 90th edition of our historic football rivalry game, currently scheduled for Sept. 26 at the Rose Bowl.  Though we are progressing toward the start of our respective seasons, at this time we do not have the necessary county and state clearances to begin competitions.  Developing a scheduling model for the fall sports season that provides optimal flexibility was an important next step in the process.  In particular, our football schedules create the opportunity for us to shift our season-opening contest to open dates later in the season (Oct. 31 and Dec. 12), if necessary.  UCLA and USC are in absolute alignment, and we remain in regular communication with state, local, and university officials.  We will continue to follow their guidance with the utmost regard for the health and safety of our student-athletes."

USC's shortened 2020 slate features 6 teams that played in bowl games last season, with 4 winning their bowl. Five of the Trojans' foes in 2020 won at least 8 games in 2019. Three of USC's home opponents won bowls, with 3 getting at least 8 victories last year.

The revision keeps intact a schedule that for the first time since 1969 does not have USC playing back-to-back games either at home or on the road. Like in 2020, the 1969 season alternated away and home games in that order.

In its original 2020 schedule, the Trojans were set to play non-conference opponents Alabama, New Mexico and Notre Dame. This will be the first interruption since 1943-44-45 in the historic intersectional battle between USC and Notre Dame that began in 1926.
