Missouri Valley Conference delaying football decision; soccer, volleyball going conference-only - Des Moines Register

As college football desperately searches for clarity ahead of the 2020 campaign, the Missouri Valley Football Conference will continue to wait.

The MVFC announced Monday it will delay any commitment on the upcoming football season until further notice amid the coronavirus pandemic, citing patience as the primary virtue in its approach. Commissioner Patty Viverito said last week an update was coming soon.

“The Missouri Valley Football Conference Presidents Council has determined patience is warranted regarding any decision to modify the 2020 fall season, seeing merit in delaying as long as there remains a possibility to provide a safe, competitive opportunity for MVFC student-athletes,” the conference said in a release.

Additionally, the MVC Presidents Council has announced it will delay the start of competition in Valley fall sports until Sept. 18 (a Friday). The league will conduct conference-only competition in men's soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball.

This decision does not include football-playing institutions that compete in leagues with separate governing bodies (members of the Pioneer Football League and the MVFC). It also does not include non-MVC sponsored sports in which conference institutions compete.

“The MVFC and its Presidents Council will continue to monitor national developments," the release continued, "and, if necessary, will consider additional action as dictated by circumstances.”

The football move comes as several other Football Championship Subdivision conferences have canceled their fall slates. The Ivy League, Colonial Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Patriot League and Southwestern Athletic Conference have all pulled the plug on 2020 football — with the CAA allowing its members to seek an independent schedule.

Adjustments have also been made at the FBS level, where the Big Ten and Pac-12 are going conference-only this fall. The ACC is also in talks to potentially join that crowd.

Those decisions financially affected several MVFC schools, which had “buy” games scheduled against various Power Five foes. Northern Iowa’s $650,000 payday from Iowa for its Sept. 5 season-opener is likely gone. North Dakota State (at Oregon), Illinois State (at Illinois), Southern Illinois (at Wisconsin) and South Dakota State (at Nebraska) lost similar opportunities. Southern Illinois has since added an Aug. 29 game at Kansas.

Other MVFC games against FBS opponents hang in the balance as well — another reason why the league is choosing to wait on a decision.

Missouri State's season-opener at Oklahoma has already been moved from Sept. 5 to Aug. 29 to allow for more flexibility. Valley schools still with FBS games pending include South Dakota (Sept. 5 at Iowa State), Youngstown State (Sept. 5 at Akron), Indiana State (Sept. 12 at MTSU), North Dakota (Sept. 12 at Kansas State) and Western Illinois (Sept. 19 at Oklahoma State).

"We want to wait until the very end," Missouri State AD Kyle Moats told the Springfield News-Leader, a USA Today Network paper. "We're going to wait until the Big 12, the ACC and the SEC make their decision. We're not going to get out in front of them. Once they make their decision, then we'll make our decision. That's status quo with 12 games and we'll move forward. If that's not the case, we'll probably have to modify it.

"The presidents will make that decision based upon what comes up here in the next week."

The Valley opting not to cancel the entire season at this time at least leaves the door open for something. The MVFC, now at 11 teams after North Dakota officially joined this offseason, currently plays eight conference games.

Missouri State and South Dakota are scheduled to meet Sept. 19 in the Valley opener, with the rest of the conference slate beginning in earnest the following Saturday. North Dakota State at Northern Iowa is the Sept. 26 headliner.

It remains undetermined what the league will do with the rest of its nonconference matchups. UNI is scheduled to play at Idaho State on Sept. 12 and host Weber State on Sept. 19.
