After hitting the pause button on spring practice to get the team cleared through COVID protocols, Georgia Tech took the practice field Tuesday morning for the first time since December.
It’s a pivotal spring, as Geoff Collins enters his third season as head coach, Jeff Sims has his first full offseason to prepare as the starting quarterback, and overall talent upgrades raise expectations for the season to come. As we’ve written about this offseason, perhaps the singular key to GT taking a big step forward in 2021 is the improvement of the passing game. Even as the team awaits the arrival of eleven more incoming freshmen and transfers over the summer, the fifteen practice spring period is vitally important for Sims and company to cement gains in timing, accuracy, and comfort in the Patenaude offense. As we look forward to a few open Saturday practices and the spring game, this will be the area to watch for this observer.
Notes:
- One more roster change came out over the weekend, as Zach Quinney announced that he will be taking a job and not returning to the football team this fall. That likely leaves a three man competition and potential rotation at tackle that will include Devin Cochran, Jordan Williams, and yet to arrive transfer Kenneth Kirby.
- On the recruiting front, Georgia Tech is anticipating the end of the dead period on May 31st and is setting up what could a huge official visit weekend June 11th-13th. 4 star RB commit Antonio Martin Jr. helped get the ball rolling in this class; at least six other players are scheduled to visit that weekend, including four stars Jaron Willis, Jaden Mangham, and DeNylon Morrisette, who would all be significant additions to the 2022 class.
