Notre Dame Football Recruiting: News, notes, and knowledge for spring - One Foot Down

As March rapidly comes to an end, I can’t help but think back at how the Notre Dame Fighting Irish recruiting strategy was forced to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how they are still having to make adjustments. Still... there is a very bright light at the end of this tunnel.

The biggest hurdle Notre Dame faced for the 2021 cycle was dealing with no official visits. For ND, those official visits — especially in the spring — were maybe the most important tool available, and it’s likely that they missed on a handful of recruits last cycle because of it all. That won’t be the case this time around — at least in another couple of months as recruits start locking up their visits for June.

Even without visits, Notre Dame is smoking hot on the recruiting trail thanks to some new life in the process with Mike Elston as the recruiting coordinator and Marcus Freeman putting in all kinds of work.

So lets get into it...

WHO’S IN?

The Irish are currently sitting with 11 commitments for the 2022 cycle. At the moment, Notre Dame’s class is ranked #2 according to the 247 Composite Team Rankings.

The Irish gained 4 new commitments in the month of March with New Jersey QB Steve Angeli, Louisiana WR Amorion Walker, California CB Jaden Mickey, and Michigan LB Joshua Burnham. So far the class represents 10 different states and is split 6/5 offense and defense.

WHO’S ON THE TEAM?

It’s still extremely early to put much stock in a scholarship chart for 2022, but it at least provides a basic blueprint for positional need as it clearly shows weaknesses and strengths as you look at the 2-Cycle hauls. Note: Any new position assignments will be updated with the beginning of spring practice.

* Eligible for 5th Year

The most elementary of glances at this chart offers some glaring holes that need to be filled on the roster. Please keep in mind, however, the “extra” year of eligibility because of COVID-19. A handful of players that would be eligible for this extra year are not listed in the scholarship chart (yet). Guys like Shayne Simon, Paul Moala, Bo Bauer, Jayson Ademilola, Justin Ademilola, and others could technically return in 2022.

Until we get some type of clarification on how the “85” rule is affected for 2022, they remain in limbo here.

NEEDS

  • Wide Receiver
  • Safety
  • Defensive Tackle

Those three stand out right now, but the importance of other positions could shift over the course of the year. Linebacker, for example, still feels like a need according to the numbers. Marcus Freeman is quickly wiping out that need at linebacker after two commitments — with the Irish in really good shape to land two — or even three — when it’s all said and done.

OFFERS

Notre Dame has got off to a fantastic start with the amount of offers out there. Currently there are 155 recruits that hold a scholarship offer from Notre Dame. That number is only up 4 over the last month, so now we see ND settling in on their main targets, but can (and will) offer more throughout the cycle.

COMMITTED ELSEWHERE

It came as no surprise once the Irish added Steven Angeli to the class we would see the dominoes of other quarterbacks — not because of Notre Dame — but because that’s just how these things work. Ty Simpson picked the Alabama Crimson Tide and Drew Allar selected the Penn State Nittany Lions.

5-STAR WATCH

The Irish don’t really have much momentum towards any 5-Stars right now, but since it’s all some fans can talk about — I’ll humor it a bit. We will simply break these 5-Star OFFERS down as COMMITTED and UNCOMMITTED and leave it at that.

Committed

Uncommitted

  • RB Gavin Sawchuck CO
  • WR Kevin Coleman MO
  • WR Tetairoa McMillan CA
  • OL Zach Rice VA
  • DE Enai White PA
  • DE Shemar Stewart FL
  • LB Shawn Murphy VA
  • LB Harold Perkins TX
  • CB Denver Harris TX
  • S Kamari Wilson FL
  • ATH Malaki Starks GA

WHO’S NEXT?

For the first time in a long while, saying “I don’t know,” feels like a really good thing. I think that 4-Star TE Holden Staes seems to be a good candidate to seal the deal, but there’s also chatter about a a few different linebackers — and maybe top 100 players OLB Jaylen Sneed and ILB Junior Tuihalamaka decide to get in this class while there’s still room.

With the June visits starting to be penciled into the books, we may still be a couple of months away from really understanding how this class will eventually look — but we’re not far off right now, and good news is always around the corner.
