Bobby Petrino: New Missouri State football coach announces staff - News-Leader

New Missouri State head football coach Bobby Petrino announced his coaching staff in advance of the 2020 season.

The former Louisville head coach's staff includes his former players and coaches along with multiple family members. Only one coach was brought back from the previous staff.

"We have put together a great coaching staff that brings a wealth of football experience at all levels,” Petrino said in a  news release. “I have had the opportunity to work with many of them at previous schools, and I've coached some of them. That familiarity will be a strength as we get underway and head into the 2020 season."

Missouri State also announced fans will have an opportunity to meet Petrino and his staff at a National Signing Day party in the PRIME Overtime Club at JQH Arena on Feb. 5. The event will start at 5 p.m. in advance of MSU's men's basketball game against Illinois State later that evening.

Here is Petrino's coaching staff:

Nick Petrino, offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach

The son of the head coach will be Missouri State's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Nick Petrino is coming off a season that he spent as UT Martin's co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He mentored Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year John Bachus III — a quarterback who was a finalist for the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award, given to the nation's top freshman.

Before UT Martin, Petrino served on his father's staff at Louisville, where he had a hand in the success of Heisman-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson. He spent time at Louisville as a quarterbacks coach and also served as a graduate assistant where he worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Nick Petrino also worked as a student assistant at Western Kentucky, under his father, where he worked alongside the quarterback coach and the offensive staff.

His first coaching gig was under his father at Arkansas as a student coach in 2010-11 where he worked with quarterbacks and helped the Razorbacks finish 11-2 and with a win at the 2011 Cotton Bowl.

Ryan Beard, defensive coordinator & safeties

The family ties to Petrino's coaching staff continue with son-in-law Ryan Beard joining MSU as the team's defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Beard was most recently the special teams coordinator and safeties coach at Central Michigan under Jim McElwain, and he coached with his father-in-law at Louisville.

Beard was the defensive backs coach and worked in quality control before becoming the Cardinals' linebackers coach and their co-special teams coordinator.

At Louisville, Beard worked with Jaire Alexander — who was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Beard also worked as the defensive backs coach at Western Kentucky in 2016 where he helped the Hilltoppers win a Conference USA championship and win the Boca Roton Bowl.

William Gay, defensive backs

Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Gay posted on Instagram that he will "take a leap of faith" to become a coach at Missouri State.

He has yet to say what that role will be, but it could be assumed that he will have a role in coaching Missouri State's secondary.

Gay spent the 2019 season as a coaching intern under Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh. He played college football at Louisville under Petrino.

In 10 years in the NFL, Gay started in 102 games and intercepted 13 passes. He returned five passes for touchdowns and helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII.

Ronnie Fouch, running backs

Former college quarterback Ronnie Fouch has in his Twitter profile that he is Missouri State's recruiting coordinator along with the team's running backs coach.

Fouch, a former Washington and Indiana State quarterback, was most recently a quarterbacks coach for the Salt Lake Stallions in the Alliance of American Football.

Petrino had Fouch on his staff at Louisville as an offensive quality coach. He was a football recruiting specialist at Georgia State before joining the Cardinals' staff.

Right out of college, he tried out for the Chicago Bears before becoming a graduate assistant at Georgia State.

Nelson Fishback, tight ends

Former Western Kentucky quarterback Nelson Fishback rejoins Petrino on his coaching staff after serving as a graduate assistant in 2018.

After Petrino was fired by Louisville, Fishback took over at Louisville as an interim quarterbacks coach. Fishback was most recently a wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Snow College in 2019.

Fishback's Twitter bio says he will be a tight ends coach in addition to being a co-special teams coordinator for the Bears.

Jeremy Darveau, offensive line

Former South Florida offensive line coach Jeremy Darveau has in his Twitter bio that he will have the same role at Missouri State.

Darveau is coming off his first, and only, season at South Florida under head coach Charlie Strong.

Darveau joined USF after coaching four seasons at Valdosta State — where he helped lead the Blazers to the 2018 NCAA Division II championship with the nation's No. 1 scoring offense in the division (52.0 ppg).

The Bears' new offensive line coach began his coaching career in 2008 at Southwest Minnesota State as a tight end and running backs graduate assistant for two seasons. He was then promoted to offensive line coach where he coached for three seasons before, again, being promoted to offensive coordinator for a season in 2013.

Darveau then left to be an offensive quality control coach at the University of Florida in 2014 and helped lead the Gators to a Birmingham Bowl victory.

Skyler Cassity, outside linebackers

Skyler Cassity is a young coach who has worked the early part of his career as a graduate assistant and student assistant.

For the last three years, Cassity was a defensive graduate assistant at Texas Tech under defensive coordinator Keith Patterson. Cassity worked directly with TTU defensive backs.

In Cassity's first season working with the Red Raider defensive backs, he helped guide them to being one of the most opportunistic defenses in the country while ranking first in the Big 12 and sixth nationally in forced turnovers.

Before coaching at Texas Tech, Cassity spent the 2016 season at Texas State, where he was promoted from defensive intern to graduate assistant all in a year's time. Cassity worked with the defensive line and assisted in recruiting.

Cassity spent 2014-16 at his alma mater, Auburn, where he assisted running backs and helped the Tigers win 25 games and the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl under Gus Malzahn. He worked with running backs including Cameron Artis-Payne, Kamryn Pettway and Peyton Barger.

Cassity is the son of Mike Cassity, who spent 40 years coaching at the collegiate level — serving as the defensive coordinator at stops including Louisville, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Baylor, Illinois and Cincinnati.

Stephen Bravo-Brown, wide receivers

The only familiar face returning to the Missouri State football coaching staff is Stephen Bravo-Brown — who will return from Dave Steckel's staff as the wide receivers coach.

Bravo-Brown just finished his first season at Missouri State.

Before MSU, he served as a graduate assistant coach and worked with wide receivers at Wake Forest from 2017-18. In 2016, he was an offensive quality control coach.

He began his career at Waldorf University where he spent the 2015 season coaching wide receivers.

Bravo-Brown was originally a walk-on receiver at South Florida and earned a scholarship and lettered his final three seasons.

Reggie Johnson, inside linebackers

Reggie Johnson will join Missouri State after serving his last three seasons as the defensive line coach at Purdue where he coached five All-Big Ten selections.

Johnson joined the Boilermakers after spending the 2016 season at Western Kentucky — where he coached defensive ends.

Prior to Western Kentucky, Johnson spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Alabama A&M, two seasons as a linebackers coach at Alabama-Birmingham and four seasons as a linebackers coach at Arkansas.

Johnson coached under Petrino for four seasons as a linebackers coach, one season as a defensive line coach and two years as a graduate assistant.

L.D. Scott, defensive line & run-game coordinator

Another son-in-law of Petrino's joins Missouri State's staff as the team's defensive line coach and run-game coordinator.

L.D. Scott spent the 2014-18 seasons at Louisville coaching the defensive line. His 2014 and 2015 defensive lines finished in the Top 20 nationally against the run.

Scott helped develop Sheldon Rankins at Louisville — who went on to be selected No. 12 overall by the New Orleans Saints in 2016.

Scott served one season as Western Kentucky's defensive ends coach for his father-in-law. He also spent the 2011 season as an intern under Petrino while working with defensive tackles before moving to a graduate assistant role in 2012 while working with the defensive line.
