Beloved Michigan high school football coach dies unexpectedly at age 37 - MLive.com

Everyone expected Dion Brown to be the Gwinn Modeltowners varsity football coach for a long time.

The former defensive back at Northern Michigan University took over the head coaching role back in 2014 when he was just 31 years old and had a bright future ahead of him.

That future was tragically cut short earlier this week after Forsyth Township police say a colleague found Brown unresponsive at Gwinn High School around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Gwinn High School staff, Forsyth police, fire personnel, and EMS medics began immediate resuscitation efforts but were unable to revive him.

An autopsy conducted at UP Health System-Marquette revealed that the 37-year-old had suffered a “natural medical event” and no foul play is suspected, according to police.

The Gwinn Area Community Schools released a statement Thursday morning confirming the passing of their head football coach and offering support to Brown’s family and the entire community.

“He was big in heart, big in spirit and big on the field,” the statement read. “Our condolences to his family and our entire community.”

Brown helped Gwinn’s football program to two playoff appearances in 2016 and 2018 and a 20-36 overall record. As a player, Brown was an all-area performer at Bloomington High School in Illinois in 1999-00. He rushed for a then-school record 1,992 yards in 11 games, averaging eight yards per carry and scoring 23 touchdowns as a senior in 2000. As a junior, he ran for 1,395 yards with 18 touchdowns and 9.6 yards per carry.

His biggest impact was within the Gwinn community, however. He was described by many as a dedicated role model and mentor for area youth athletes. He helped give back to his community and even had his own football teams dedicate every Sunday in the summer to help elderly neighbors clear and stack wood.
