Spring Football Preview: A quarterback competition... again - 247Sports

Overview

Virginia Tech could have a fun competition to watch this spring as three former four-star quarterbacks compete for playing time. With Ryan Willis no longer in Blacksburg, three of the four scholarship quarterbacks are true dual-threat quarterbacks with very good running ability.  Historically, Virginia Tech has performed at their best with a dual-threat quarterback under center.

While Hooker enters the spring as the clubhouse favorite, it doesn’t appear he is a lock to retain his starting ability.  Burmeister seems like the type of quarterback that can cause fits in a competition because of how elusive he is, but there have been concerns about his arm strength during his time at Oregon.  Patterson, the most powerful runner in Blacksburg, can become a battering ram for Virginia Tech’s offense, similar to Jerod Evans, but he has to improve his accuracy before he can really make a push for the starting gig.

And then there is Kadum, who is more of a pro-style quarterback, though he can run if needed.  Kadum is a perfect quarterback to take a flier on – he is a winner in one of the toughest high school football conferences in the nation – but will his high school success translate over into the college football landscape?

Final Thoughts

The quarterback competition will likely push into fall camp, which is simply Fuente’s style.  It would be surprising if a starting quarterback was named this spring, but the spring practices should give the staff a good idea of where each quarterback is in their development and what they can bring to the table.

With Hooker also rehabbing from some injuries sustained this fall, it is expected that he will be held back some and not put in live situations, where Burmeister, Patterson, and Kadum could go live a few times this spring to see how they react in certain situations.

There certainly is a role for Patterson at Virginia Tech, but this competition seems like it will come down to Hooker and Burmeister based on buzz that we have heard over the past few months.  If Patterson can show marked improvement in the passing game, the competition could truly become a three-person event but right now, Hooker and Burmester look like the two to watch as the Hokies prepare to return to the field.
