A 15-year-old Florida high school football player who skipped a team-sponsored college tour to attend his grandfather’s funeral was gunned down outside the church after the service.
Deerfield High School sophomore Terrance Jackson was among two people killed across the street from Victory City Church in Riviera Beach at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
Police said on Twitter that the shooting “was not a random act of violence.”
“While the motive for the shooting is still being investigated, it is believed it was a result of a dispute between relatives of the deceased whose funeral had been held,” Riviera Beach Police wrote.
Jackson, who played defensive end, had passed on a trip to visit colleges with 20 teammates in order to attend the funeral, the team’s coach, Jevon Glenn, told the outlet from Auburn, Alabama.
Glenn said Jackson was a promising player on the verge of coming into his own.
“He was waiting in the wings,” the coach said of Jackson. “This year was going to be his year.”
“Why God!” the team posted on Twitter.
Victory City Church pastor Tywuante Lupoe said in a videotaped statement posted on Facebook that the church had been aware of the potential for violence because of a dispute involving the family.
He said security guards and police were posted at the funeral service — but the shooting took place after many mourners left and was sparked by a fight that broke out across the street.
Also killed in the shooting was 47-year-old Royce Freeman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman also shot at the scene was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
