EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ football team scored the only points in the fourth quarter as it held tough on defense late to defeat William Paterson, 15-14, on Saturday at Lions Stadium on Homecoming and Parent & Family Day.
After Bobby Wortman kicked his third field goal of the game, this one from 27 yards, to give the Lions a 15-14 lead with 14:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, TCNJ's defensed forced three turnovers on William Paterson's final three possessions.
William Paterson moved to the TCNJ 39 midway through the fourth, and Spencer Lee was picked off by Luke Young with 7:25 remaining. Two plays into the Lions' drive, though, resulted in a TCNJ turnover that set the Pioneers up at the Lions' 35-yard line.
William Paterson drove the ball to the TCNJ 5 with 4:19 to play, but Gavin Liepe forced Lee to fumble, and Sal Tardogno recovered. That allowed the Lions to run some clock and to force WPU to burn its timeouts. TCNJ picked up two first downs before punting the ball back with just 1:09 remaining.
William Paterson moved to the TCNJ 42, helped in part by a pair of fourth-down conversions on Lee pass completions. But he was nailed by Nick Celli on second down at that spot, and he fumbled. Tardogno was the man on the spot again, recovering another fumble to end the threat.
After a nearly scoreless first half, Wortman kicked a 32-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the second quarter to give TCNJ a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
William Paterson scored with 12:45 remaining in the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass, but the Lions responded with with a 10-yard pass from John Donegan to Matthew Macaulay to cap an 11-play, 52-yard drive. Donegan completed an 18-yard pass to Lucas Spitzer on the drive. The PAT failed, but TCNJ led, 9-7.
TCNJ forced a punt, but William Paterson retook the lead on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery by Alajuwon Bell. He went 20 yards for the touchdown that put WPU back on top, 14-9.
The Lions responded with a Wortman 40-yard field goal on a drive that started at the TCNJ 41. Joey Bellamy Jr. gave the Lions that field position with a strong kick return. Nicholas Chambers had a 22-yard rush to get the Lions into the red zone, and the field goal cut the WPU lead to 14-12. Chambers rushed for 97 yards on 18 carries. Mark Pacini had 81 yards on 14 carries.
In a preview of the strong fourth quarter by the TCNJ defense, Jacob Maurice forced a fumble that was recovered by Celli at the WPU 31. That set up Wortman's third field goal to make it 15-14 and the three defensive turnovers in the fourth period.
The Lions forced four fumbles and recovered three. They also had three sacks. Cole Groschel had 12 tackles to lead the team. Tyler Ludwikowski had nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
With the win, the Lions are .500 or better after four games into a season for the first time since 2013.
TCNJ returns to action next Saturday night at Montclair State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
