Marked as one of college football's elite programs thanks to its rapid rise under Dabo Swinney, there's a different feel inside Clemson's football facility this month compared to a year ago when the Tigers were coming off their second national championship in three seasons. Synonymous with winning, Clemson's loss to LSU in January didn't sit well with players, who aren't used to having their backs against the wall heading into a new campaign.
“It was a gut punch, for sure, down for a couple of days,” Swinney said last week, looking back on his team's first loss in 30 games. “But it’s a decision in how you respond to the win, respond to the loss and our team has been amazing, our leadership, it’s been good for me to be able to see that.”
Swinney said his team took the loss hard, especially after one of the poorest halves of football the Tigers have played in several years against a quality opponent.
“From that standpoint, it was something that I paid close attention to, especially with Trevor (Lawrence),” Swinney said. “I’d never lost a game with him, but he was amazing, how he handled it, how the team responded.”
One of the frontrunners to return to the Playoff, Clemson stayed at No. 1 in ESPN senior college football analyst Mark Schlabach's updated his Way Too Early Top 25 preseason poll for 2020 on Wednesday.
We've compared his with our own preseason list:
