Easley athletic director Gill Payne needed stability. Over the last two years, it's been anything but for Easley football. After John Windham resigned on Nov. 8, 2018 after four seasons, Easley hired Caleb King as their new head coach in January 2019.
King's stint was short lived however, he abruptly resigned after one season on December 17, 2019 after compiling a 3-7 record. In the search for a new coach, Payne looked to find someone who understood the Easley culture.
"It's big for us to have someone who's familiar with Easley and wants to be a part of Easley," Payne said. "The people here, we all bleed green. Football is the sport that carries the flag for all athletics and we need stability and we need someone who's willing to come in and roll their sleeves up, work hard and love on our kids."
"I feel like Jordan Durrah is the perfect man."
Jordan Durrah is the new Easley football coach. He announced it on his Twitter account Friday and Payned confirmed the announcement on Saturday. This past season, Durrah served as offensive coordinator at Byrnes High School.
"It was pretty much a dream job situation for me," Durrah said. "Starting at Easley High School in 2010 with my coaching career when I saw the job posting I said I would love the opportunity to go back to Easley and lead that football program."
Durrah's football roots are in the Upstate. He played high school football at Wade Hampton for two years before transferring to Byrnes in 2005. As a defensive back and wide receiver, he helped to Rebels to a state championship in 2005 and graduated in 2007.
After an injury cut his college career short at LaGrange College, Durrah transferred to Clemson University. He was a member of the video department for the football program before graduating and starting his coaching career at Easley in 2010 as a defensive backs coach.
He's made coaching stops at Seneca in 2012 as a running backs/defensive backs coach, Eastside (FL.) as a DB coach then quarterback/offensive coordinator then the last four years at Byrnes in several roles: wide receivers, defensive backs and the last two seasons as offensive coordinator.
The 2019 Byrnes offense averaged over 400 yards per game and averaged 40.6 points per game on the way to an 11-2 season.
"It just starts with being fortunate to have really good players," Durrah said. "I believe in having a spread offense with multiple formations and doing a lot of things to create match ups where they can have success."
Additionally, having coached several years on both the offense and defense will serve him well in his role at Easley.
"It helps me becasue it gives you a deeper understanding of the game of football," Durrah said. "It also helps when talking to assistants, you kind of have that validity in understanding what happens on both sides."
Durrah is accepting a challenge at Easley, they have not had a winning season since 2015. He's looking forward to being in it for the long haul and rebuilding the program from the ground up.
"Re-uniting the football program with the community through rec league and middle school," Durrah said. "Getting everyone back on the same page, I'm looking forward to that goal of uniting everything and creating a positive culture."
"Like I told them in the interview process, I'm committed to Easley and I'm in it for the long haul. I want to stick my feet into it and commit to the process and start to build it."
It's still unknown when Durrah's full-time duties will begin. He will meet the team and hold an introduction at Easley on Tuesday, February 18 at 4:30 pm in Easley's media center.
He plans on being full-time by the time that spring practice starts.
