Brent Vieselmeyer resigned as football head coach at Santa Margarita, the school announced Tuesday.
Vieselmeyer, who coached the Eagles for one season, is leaving to take a coaching position with the NFL’s Washington Redskins. Jack Del Rio recently was named Washington’s defensive coordinator, and Vieselmeyer and Del Rio have coached together in the NFL in the past.
Santa Margarita this past season finished 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the Trinity League. The Eagles lost to Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth 35-21 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.
The Eagles in 2020 will have their third head coach in as many seasons. Rich Fisher was not retained after the 2018 season in which Santa Margarita was 3-7 overall and 0-5 in league. Fisher coached Santa Margarita for three seasons.
Vieselmeyer’s coaching experience includes a long tenure as an Orange Lutheran assistant coach and a stint as an assistant linebackers and safeties coach with the NFL’s Raiders.
A letter sent to Santa Margarita families from school president Andy Sulick included: “The school is extremely grateful for the time, effort and passion Coach Vieselmeyer instilled in our football program. His energy, work-ethic and player friendly approach had a tremendous impact on the school and Eagle Football. While we are incredibly excited for Coach Vieselmeyer personally, SMCHS is left with a heavy heart. This is a bitter-sweet moment for all.
“I want to firmly convey my commitment to find our next head football coach in a steadfast fashion and to continue to support our football program beyond this time of transition.
“The search for Coach Vieselmeyer’s successor will begin immediately.”
Other county schools looking to fill their football head coaching vacancies are Katella, El Toro, Saddleback and Westminster. The coaches at those schools resigned after the season: Fred DiPalma (Katella), Andy Diaz (El Toro), Nick Diulio (Saddleback) and Willy Puga (Westminster).
Saddleback is accepting applications through Friday. El Toro is expected to announce its new coach at the end of this week or possibly next week.
Coaching changes completed since the end of the season include Michael Calahan replacing the retiring Kurt Westling at Aliso Niguel, ex-NFL player Aaron Craver replacing the retiring Rick Gibson at Woodbridge and Dan Urbanos replacing Bob Sykes, who resigned, at Kennedy.
