Section 4 Football Schedule: Top storylines for the 2020 season - Pressconnects

State champions going at it in Week 4, massive realignment and eight-man teams getting a full complement of games are just some of the story lines as Section 4 released its schedule and division alignment for the 2020 football season Friday.

Reigning Class B state champion Chenango Forks and two-time defending Class C state champion Susquehanna Valley will meet in Week 4 in a Division III game at SV.

That one will feature two 2019 state players of the year in Forks’ Lucas Scott and the Sabers’ Logan Haskell, both entering their senior seasons.

It’s possible SV will have a 29-game winning streak after back-to-back unbeaten seasons heading into Week 4 (Oct. 2 or 3). Forks, which went 13-0 last season, could be looking for its 17th straight victory.

The last time the teams met came in a 2017 Class B sectional semifinal the Blue Devils won, 28-7. The Sabers haven’t lost since.

The Blue Devils are one of five teams that dropped from Class B to C. Norwich, Oneonta, Chenango Valley and Waverly are the others.

Sidney and Newark Valley dropped from Class C to D, and Greene and Moravia moved to eight-man football, which will have nine Section 4 teams in 2020. They’ll play an eight-game regular season, an increase of one game from 2019.

Classes A and B each have three teams.

Binghamton went from Class AA to A and joins Union-Endicott and Vestal in that classification. Those three teams will play in Division II, along with Class B members Maine-Endwell, Johnson City and Owego.

Other Section 4 football storylines for 2020

Waverly and M-E will be tested early, getting a double-dose of state champions.

The Wolverines will open their season Sept. 11 at home against SV before traveling to Forks in Week 2.

The Spartans will play road games at SV and Forks in the second and third weeks of the season. M-E, which lost Section 4 Class B title games to Forks the past two seasons, then hosts defending Class A champion U-E in Week 4.

Corning opens defense of its Class AA sectional title at Binghamton on Sept. 11.

Tioga, winner of eight of the last nine Section 4 Class D titles, including last season’s 44-36 victory over Walton, opens at home Sept. 11 against Delhi.
