Wayland High School officials have announced that Tim Gibson is the Wildcats’ new varsity football coach.
Gibson most recently served as the varsity assistant offensive line coach at Grand Rapids Catholic Central High High School. But he has Wayland roots. He started his coaching career at Wayland and served as the Wildcats’ head coach from 1999-2003. He led the Wildcats to three playoff appearances and an OK Gold League Conference title. That included a trip to the Division 3 state semifinals in 2002.
Gibson also was Forest Hills Eastern’s first football coach, serving there for nine seasons beginning in 2004. The Hawks qualified for the postseason five times under Gibson.
“I’m excited and humbled by the opportunity to return to the Wayland Union school district and community,” Gibson said in a statement. “I look forward to meeting and getting to know our players and their families along with reconnecting with former players, colleagues and friends. Wayland football has always been special to me and I’m blessed to be a Wildcat again.”
Gibson is married to his wife Laurie of 25 years and have two children, Emily (23) and Garret (20). He will take over a program that finished 0-9 last fall.
“I am really excited to get Tim here to meet our players and start his off-season programs,” Wayland athletic director Matt Moffett said. “He has great passion and enthusiasm for students and brings a wealth of football knowledge to our players and program.”
