Pinson Valley has its new football coach.
Sam Shade – a Wenonah grad who played on Alabama’s 1992 national championship team, played eight seasons in the NFL and has coached in college pro foot all – will be Pinson Valley’s new coach, pending Jefferson County Board of Education approval.
Pinson Valley Principal Michael Turner confirmed the hiring of Shade, who most recently worked as a special teams assistant for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
“We think this is great opportunity for us,” Turner said.
Shade replaces Patrick Nix, who led Pinson Valley to Class 6A state titles in 2017 and 2018 and left to become the head coach at Central-Phenix City last month. This will be Shade’s first head coaching joba t any level.
“You lose a guy like Patrick Nix, and you think, ‘How am I ever going to replace that guy?’” Turner said.
After playing defensive back at Alabama, Shade played four seasons with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals for four seasons and four more with the Washington Redskins. In 117 NFL games, he tallied 116 tackles and 10 interceptions.
Shade spent four seasons as a volunteer assistant at Briarwood Christian from 2004-08 and then spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Samford University in Homewood. He coached at Georgia State as a cornerbacks coach in 2017 and joined the Browns staff in 2018 as an assistant special teams coach.
Shade takes over a Pinson Valley program that’s compiled a 38-4 record over the last three seasons with Nix as head coach. Pinson Valley has also made 10 straight playoff appearances.
Other former Alabama players now serving as head coaches for Alabama high school programs include Josh Niblett at Hoover, Bill Smith at Fayette County, Jeff Foshee at Curry, Don Dover at Fultondale, Chavis Williams at Carbon Hill, and Andrew Zow at Bessemer City.
