Ryan Day didn’t need to wait for the legal process to fully play out.
On Wednesday, the Ohio State football coach dismissed two players from his team, Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint, who have been accused of rape. They are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday after being charged with first-degree felonies.
“I have dismissed Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint from our football program,” Day said in a statement. “I am not making any statement on the criminal charges, but it is clear they did not live up to our standards and my expectations. The athletics department will make sure they both continue to have access to the health and well-being resources available to students and student-athletes. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, I will not be commenting further.”
Riep and Wint both were defensive backs for the Buckeyes, and heading into their senior seasons. Riep had two interceptions in 2019 and was expected to contend for a starting role.
According to police reports, a woman said she and Riep were engaging in consensual sex when she asked to stop. Wint entered the room, and asked to join in. Wint then allegedly held the woman down and raped her, while Riep held her down.
Riep tried to get the woman to say on video that everything was consensual, and also wanted her to shower before she went home, according to the affidavit.
The alleged incident occurred Feb. 4, in a Columbus apartment shared by Wint and Riep. Attorneys for both players expect their clients to be exonerated, but declined to address specific questions about the charges.
