The Plano football team hasn’t won a playoff game in the last 10 seasons. The seven-time state champion will turn to a new coach as it tries to end that streak.
Plano ISD announced Wednesday that Jaydon McCullough will be accepting a new position within the school district after serving as Plano’s head coach and athletic director for the last 12 years. McCullough had a record of 70-59, including 2-7 in the playoffs.
McCullough did not respond to phone calls or a text message seeking comment. New Plano ISD athletic director Jeff Smith did not answer phone calls, and neither did assistant athletic directors Ralph Hinds or Karen Kalhoefer.
“Coach McCullough leaves a decades-long imprint on Wildcat football, going back even before his time as an educator and coach. As a graduate of the program, Jaydon has a true passion for making a difference in the lives of our young athletes, and we will be forever grateful for his hard work and commitment to the Plano Wildcats,” Plano principal Sarah Watkins said in a press release.
Plano ISD will immediately begin the search process to fill the head coach position. The opening will be posted soon on the Plano ISD website and other relevant employment sites, with the goal of having a new head coach in place this spring.

Plano ISD didn’t have a representative in the football playoffs last season for the first time in 30 years. Plano is the state’s fourth-largest high school, with an enrollment of 4,999 for last week’s UIL realignment, but the Wildcats last won a state championship in 1994, with Gerald Brence as the coach.
Plano was 10-2 in 2008, the first season with McCullough as the Wildcats’ head coach after Brence stepped down to focus on his duties as the Plano ISD athletic director. Plano beat Duncanville 28-17 in the first round of the playoffs in 2009 — the Wildcats’ last postseason victory.
Plano has had just one winning record in the last five seasons, going 7-4 in 2017. The last time that Plano won more than seven games in a season was 2008.
