Huron’s signing day ceremony goes deeper than football - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR – There was a sense of responsibility Antaiwn Mack put upon his shoulders when he accepted the job to be Ann Arbor Huron’s football coach in 2019.

He knew about the struggles the program had endured – five coaches in seven years and a state-leading 39-game losing streak, which the team snapped last season – prior to his arrival.

A native of Ypsilanti, Mack wanted to do more than change the culture of Huron’s football program, he also wanted to help change the lives of the young athletes under in guidance.

On Wednesday, Mack was able to see his goal come to fruition as multiple Huron football players signed to play college football during a ceremony held at the high school.

Nine players from the 2019-2020 team are expected to head off to compete at the next level, and six of those players were in attendance for the ceremony in front of family and friends.

The list of players that will compete in college goes as follows:

Tyree Hill (Wayne State), Aaron Winston (John Hopkins), Darren Moore (Morehouse College), Mike Davis (Mercyhurst), Cameron Donnell (Olivet College), Marcell Cooper (Highland Community College), Marquis Wilson (Olivet College), Ryan Watson (Hiram College or Madonna) and Aaron Garrett (Hampton).

“It’s definitely a rewarding experience for these families,” Mack said. “My whole thing when I came here was to try and change lives in a positive way, so I’m extremely happy for these families.

“I continue to try and advocate for our kids within Washtenaw County, not just at Huron. I'm looking to help all the kids that I can.”

Near the end of the ceremony, Eric Winston, the father of Aaron, was compelled to declare his appreciation for the impact Mack had on not only his son but the other seniors as well.

“This is my second child coming through (Huron) and we’ve had multiple coaches,” Eric said. “In our experiences, all those coaches work really but I've not seen another coach work as hard as coach Mack did in terms of looking for and finding opportunities for a variety of kids.

“When you see that and when you see other people saying that, you really appreciate that, and you recognized the effort and work that goes in to doing that.”

Davis, who chose Mercyhurst over Northwood, Saginaw Valley State and a preferred walk-on offer from Michigan, also praised Mack for his involvement in the seniors’ recruitment.

“Coach Mack worked his tail off,” Davis said. “He puts us before he puts himself. That’s the most important thing for us, it really helps us out.

“Getting an opportunity to go to the next level and play ball and get an education, it’s just all a blessing. We worked really hard for it.”

Davis said he’s hopeful the event will show the upcoming athletes that they too can achieve what this year’s group of seniors achieved.

“We are leading by example,” Davis said. “It’s about how much work you put in. I hope that the next generation can do better than us and show that Huron is actually a good school.”

Mack said he believes the future is bright for Huron and hopes this is the first of many signing ceremonies to come.

“When you’ve got 30 coaches coming in the building in one week, it’s a great feeling,” Mack said. “It’s an eye-opener for the community, for the school itself. I’m definitely happy for the kids. It touches my heart.

“I just want to keep moving forward and helping these kids. I’m not done, my work isn’t done. I just want to make sure we can continue to build this program in a positive way.”
