If there was any doubt about which side of the “multi-sport athlete” debate former Oregon Ducks star Devon Allen is on when it comes to football recruits, he’s cleared the air.
On Tuesday, Allen tweeted some advice for football players looking to improve their performance:
Allen was a two-sport star at Oregon.
Playing three injury-plagued seasons in Eugene, he finished his gridiron career with 54 receptions for 919 yards and eight touchdowns.
But he really made his mark felt on the Hayward Field track.
Allen was the 110-meter hurdles NCAA champion in 2014 and 2016 and finished first in the U.S. Olympic trials in 2016, earning a trip to the Rio Olympics.
He went on to become the national champion in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2018 USA outdoor track and field championships.
In the world of high school athletics, it is becoming increasingly popular to specialize in a sport despite overwhelming evidence that multi-sport performance is good for an athlete’s development.
According to USA Today, 71 percent of Division I football players competed in multiple sports in high school.
If Allen had his way, however, that number would be significantly higher.
