Who were picked NDN Football Offensive and Defensive Players of the Decade? - Naples Daily News

Southwest Florida has a reputation for producing talented football players, and the recently released Naples Daily News All-Decade teams reflected as much.

The Football Offense and Defense All-Decade teams, created by Daily News staff and consisting of players from Collier County in the 2010s, are loaded – five players currently in the NFL, 10 who played at Power Five college programs, 24 total who went Division I, and three U.S. Army All-Americans.

From that stacked field, the Daily News decided the best of the best. Naples High School running back Manny Morgan and Immokalee High’s Mackensie Alexander have been selected the offensive and defensive Players of the Decade, respectively.

The Daily News writers and editors picked winners and also allowed readers to vote on who they think should be the players of the decade. The winners of the reader polls were St. John Neumann quarterback Jensen Jones and Gulf Coast defensive back Lukas Masterson.

In three varsity seasons (2010-12), Morgan rushed for 4,546 yards for a Golden Eagles team that went 34-5 and won six playoff games. Morgan is second in career rushing at Naples, a program known for its rushing prowess.

A 2013 graduate of Naples, Morgan ran for more than 1,100 yards all three years with the Eagles. His senior season he had 2,069 yards as the Eagles won a regional championship. No one in Collier County has broken 2,000 rushing yards in a season since.

Morgan played four years at the University of Akron, finishing with 955 yards from scrimmage in 27 college games.

Alexander doesn’t have stunning statistics like Morgan, but only because he was such a proficient cornerback that opposing offenses rarely threw the ball his way. He played four varsity seasons at Immokalee, starting the final three (2010-12) before graduating in 2013.

Ranked the No. 4 player in the Class of 2012 by ESPN, Alexander finished with 139 career tackles and 10 interceptions. He also played some receiver in 2012, when Immokalee lost in the Class 5A championship game by one point.

Alexander went to Clemson, redshirting his first year then playing two season before leaving early for the NFL Draft. He was picked by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round in 2016. After four years in Minnesota, Alexander signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason.

Jones, a 2019 graduate of Neumann, ran for 4,327 yards and 64 touchdowns in three seasons for the Celtics. He also passed for 2,673 yards and 22 touchdowns. Jones was the Class 2A Player of the Year and a MaxPreps Small School All-American as a senior (2018) when Neumann went 10-2.

Jones currently plays football at the Air Force Academy.

Masterson had 122 tackles and four return touchdowns before graduating from Gulf Coast in 2016. His senior season (2015) he had six interceptions and 31 pass breakups. He plays at Wake Forest, where he started at safety last season.
